Job Description

The Department of History at Binghamton University (SUNY) invites applications for the position of a tenure‑track assistant professor in Maritime/Global Asia, broadly defined to encompass East Asia, Central Asia, South/Southeast Asia, and/or the Indian Ocean. We welcome candidates whose research adopts transregional approaches, with possible focus on the histories of environment, technology, medicine, or migration. Regional and chronological specializations are open, but applicants must demonstrate proficiency in at least one Asian language and have research interests from the 13th century onward.

Binghamton's Department of History is home to a vibrant intellectual community with strengths in global and transregional history, environmental history, empires, and history of science and medicine, spanning from medieval Europe and the Ottoman Empire to modern South and East Asia. The successful candidate will join dynamic programs that champion innovative scholarship, pedagogy, and public engagement.

The start date for the position is August 17, 2026.

Requirements
  • A Ph.D. in History or a closely related field, by July 1, 2026
  • Proficiency in at least one Asian language
  • Research experience in at least one area of maritime or Global Asia, broadly defined to encompass East Asia, Central Asia, South/Southeast Asia, and/or the Indian Ocean
  • Research expertise in the chronological framework from the 13th century onward
Preferred Qualifications
  • Research addresses themes related to the histories of environment, technology, medicine, or migration
  • Transregional approach to scholarship
  • College or university teaching experience
