Position Summary
The Peer Support Specialist uses real life experience with mental health, behavioral health, and/or substance use disorders to provide support, mentoring, advocacy, and hope to individuals in recovery. This role promotes recovery-oriented services, self-sufficiency, and community integration while working collaboratively with a multidisciplinary treatment team.
The Peer Support Specialist assists individuals in the least restrictive setting possible, helping them build skills, prevent relapse, and strengthen community connections.
Essential ResponsibilitiesUse personal recovery experience to provide mentoring, guidance, emotional support, and advocacy to individuals with behavioral health and/or substance use disorders
Promote hope, self-determination, and recovery-focused goals
Foster a team culture that respects individual preferences, perspectives, and strengths
Assist clients with problem-solving, mediation, relapse prevention, brief respite, and community stabilization
Support skill development to enhance independence and long-term recovery
Provide one-on-one peer support and help create a sense of belonging and community
Facilitate access to community resources, services, and recreational opportunities
Provide transportation for client outings and resource connections using a personal vehicle
Communicate emotional and behavioral observations to the treatment team
Participate in weekly staffing meetings and contribute ideas to support client growth
Complete all required documentation, including DAP notes, in compliance with state and organizational standards
Maintain assigned caseload and meet billing expectations on a monthly, quarterly, and annual basis
Collaborate closely with the treatment team to support client goals, activities, and treatment plans
Perform other duties as assigned by the Senior Director of Outpatient Services and New Day, Inc. administration
Must meet Montana Department of Labor and Industry licensing requirements for Certified Behavioral Health Peer Support Specialist in accordance with MCA 37-78-202 and ARM
Must self-identify as a person with lived experience of mental health, behavioral health, and/or substance use challenges
High school diploma or equivalent required
Certified Behavioral Health Peer Support Specialist (Montana)
Must maintain certifications (provided by New Day, Inc.) in:
Non-Violent Crisis Intervention (CPI)
CPR
First Aid
Valid Montana driver’s license with an insurable driving record
Personal vehicle with full coverage insurance
