OverviewThe Montana Department of Transportation is recruiting for Motor Carrier Enforcement Scale Officers. This position is assigned to a fixed weigh station to enforce international, federal, and state commercial motor carrier laws. Officers regulate and enforce laws including height, width, weight restrictions, vehicle licensing, motor fuel tax, hazardous material transport, and vehicle, operator, and load safety.
ResponsibilitiesEnforce commercial motor carrier laws and regulations, enforce vehicle and hazardous material restrictions, conduct inspections, investigate violations, and maintain accurate records. Officers exercise full autonomous decision‑making authority on a wide range of regulation and enforcement issues.
QualificationsApplicants must comply with title 7-32-303 MCA and must meet peace officer qualifying standards: citizen of the United States, at least 18 years old, pass fingerprint criminal record check, not convicted of a crime that could have led to imprisonment, good moral character, and be medically fit as determined by a licensed physician.
- Knowledge, skills and abilities:
English language, psychology, customer and personal service, telecommunications, technology, mathematics, clerical, computers and electronics.
- Pass the 4‑part National Police Officer Selection Test.
- Complete the Montana Physical Abilities Test (MPAT) within a specified time.
- Pass a pre‑employment drug test.
- Graduate from the MLEA or equivalent and retain a basic certificate from the Montana Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST).
- Take a formal Oath of Office and complete a structured Field Officer Training (FTO) program.
- Culture of public service and work/life balance.
