National Substation Physical Design Sub‑Business Class Leader
HDR is a leader in engineering, architecture, environmental, and construction services. This position focuses on protection and control design matters within the power delivery substation business class. The role reports to Area Operations Leadership and escalates to the Substation Business Class Lead.
Key Responsibilities- Drive development and implementation of a quality program to foster physical design technical growth for junior engineers.
- Develop a physical design training and career development program for the national business class.
- Conduct quarterly training and meetings with EITs and junior engineers.
- Create and maintain technical practices, standards, and expectations to solve client problems.
- Build and manage a network of technical experts/SMEs for the national practice.
- Support open communication of production needs; collaborate with BCL to influence staffing and expertise levels.
- Support professional development of staff and production tools, including best practices, policies, papers, presentations, and credentialing.
- Lead proposal technical reviews (Blue Team Reviews).
- Participate in root cause analysis and PARRs (Project Approach Resource Review).
- Achieve 70–75% utilization by supporting projects.
- Active participant in internal or external technical working groups.
- Subject matter expertise or strong knowledge of physical/outdoor design concepts.
- Constructability and design criteria
- Bus span calculations
- AC and DC sizing and load calculations
- Raceway and cable design
- Material selection, BOM, grounding, lightning protection, lighting design, major equipment specification
- Experience with general arrangement, cross‑sectional arrangement, clearance checks, grounding packages, lightning protection studies
- Mentor and coordinate physical design workshare with multiple area offices
- Strong knowledge of best practices, industry standards, and codes related to substation outdoor/physical design
- Experience with substation design software (e.g., CDEGS, WinIGS)
- Bachelor’s degree in Professional, Architecture, Engineering, or related field
- 10+ years of experience
- Committed to quality, improvement and HDR values
- Professional or engineering registration and relevant technical experience
- Experience developing and managing diverse teams
- Collaborate with other business class leaders, operations managers, technical directors, and marketing managers

Full‑time regular employee. Compensation range: $142,240 – $203,200, based on skills, experience, education, and location.
