CONFIDENTIAL SEARCH – SENIOR EARTHWORK ESTIMATOR (HEAVY CIVIL)

I’m working on a retained search with a well-established heavy civil contractor (c. $40M–$50M annual revenue, 130+ employees) that is looking to hire a seasoned Earthwork Estimator to strengthen their preconstruction function.

This is not a replacement hire - it’s a strategic addition driven by growth. The current Head Estimator has stepped into a VP-level leadership role and is still estimating 1–2 jobs per week. The business needs an experienced professional who can take full ownership of bids and relieve pressure at the top.

The Opportunity You will:
  • Lead bids from start to finish (no partial packages)
  • Perform detailed quantity take-offs across civil, structural, site electric and utilities
  • Review and interpret geotechnical & environmental reports
  • Develop subcontractor scopes and solicit pricing
  • Assemble and submit RFP responses
  • Evaluate safety risks, means & methods, and margin strategy
  • Coordinate handoff to Project Management upon award
Projects range from $100K to $20M
, primarily in:
  • Civil earthwork
  • Underground utilities (wet & dry up to 18”)
  • DOT highway work

The contractor self-performs excavation and backfill and even owns aggregate mines to control supply and margin.

What They’re Looking For Must Have:
  • 5–10 years’ estimating experience in civil earthwork and underground utilities
  • Heavy Civil background
  • Ability to run the full bid lifecycle independently
  • Strong proficiency with:
  • Agtek software suite
  • Microsoft Office
  • Experience interpreting plans, specifications, and geotech reports
Nice to Have:
  • DOT experience
  • Familiarity with state DOT specifications
  • Field experience as a supplement to estimating

They’re specifically looking for someone seasoned - not a junior estimator looking to learn the ropes.

Why This Role?
  • Established contractor with a strong backlog
  • Flat leadership structure — direct access to ownership
  • Employees empowered to make decisions
  • Majority of projects keep teams home nightly
  • Clear runway into:
  • Project Management
  • Operations
  • Measured performance expectations - real success metrics kick in during season two

This is a business that values longevity and promotes internally.

  • Discretionary bonus (historically budgeted and paid)
  • 401(k) with 3.5% match (with 6% employee contribution)
  • Company truck or allowance ($800–$900/month) + gas card
  • Free health insurance (employee)
  • Full health, dental, vision, disability & life insurance
Interview Process
  • Initial Zoom interview
  • Final in-person meeting
  • Offer decision typically made quickly for the right candidate

If you’re currently estimating civil earthwork and utilities and feel underutilized - or carrying too much weight at VP level without support - this could be worth a confidential discussion.
