WRAIR - Biochemistry Research Opportunity
DoD internship opportunity at the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research (WRAIR) administered by ORISE.
Location:
Bethesda, Maryland. Appointment length: twelve months, with possible renewal. Start dates determined at selection; applications reviewed on an ongoing basis.
The Department of Defense DoD is offering a postgraduate internship for individuals with a bachelor’s or master’s degree in biochemistry or related disciplines to support antibacterial development projects under mentor guidance. The program includes laboratory and professional development activities aligned with DoD and federal laboratory standards.
Responsibilities- Work on projects focused on antibacterial development; hypothesize targets in proteins required for bacterial viability, virulence, and pathogenicity.
- Learn and perform in vitro screening methods including checkerboard assays, MIC, biofilm assays, time-kill studies, zone of inhibition, bacterial culture, and bacterial quantification.
- Gain experience with in vivo experiments (drug dosing, animal necropsy and surgery, animal infection).
- Maintain and manage samples and data (collection, analysis, and entry of experimental data); maintain an up-to-date laboratory notebook.
- Report findings to Principal Investigators and present data during lab meetings.
- Participate in professional development through learning objectives aligned to personal career goals and future preparation for a career as a professional scientist in federal laboratories.
Location:
Bethesda, Maryland. WRAIR is ready to make appointments immediately; exact start dates determined lications are reviewed on an ongoing basis and positions filled as qualified candidates are identified.
One-year research appointment with potential renewal based on funding, project assignment, program rules, and participant availability.

About ORISEThis program is administered by Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU) through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy to manage ORISE. QualificationsA bachelor’s or master’s degree in biochemistry, chemistry, biology, biophysics, or a related discipline. Degree must have been received within five years of the appointment start date.
