The Frederick National Laboratory is operated by Leidos Biomedical Research, Inc. Program Description

The Laboratory Animal Sciences Program (LASP) provides exceptional quality animal care and technical support services for animal research performed at the National Cancer Institute at the Frederick National Laboratory for Cancer Research. LASP executes this mission by providing a broad spectrum of state-of-the-art technologies and services that are focused on the design, generation, characterization, and application of genetically engineered and biological animal models of human disease, which are aimed at the development of targeted diagnostics and therapies.

LASP contributes to advancing human health, developing new treatments, and improving existing treatments for cancer and other diseases while ensuring safe and humane treatment of animals.

Key Roles/Responsibilities
  • Providing veterinary diagnostic, surgical and treatment services for research animals including mice, non-human primates, and aquatic species.
  • Performing a variety of both invasive and non-invasive surgical procedures in rodents and non-human primates.
  • Working as part of a multi-faceted team to review and implement guidelines and administer procedures to ensure full compliance with all applicable regulations, policies and standards required to maintain AAALAC accreditation of the animal care and use program.
  • Resolving issues pertaining to laboratory animal husbandry, health, and welfare.
  • Providing support for the NCI-Bethesda Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee.
  • Assisting with training programs for animal caretakers, technicians and research staff who utilize research animals.
  • Reviewing and implementing standard operating procedures governing research animals including nonhuman primates, rodents, and aquatic species.
  • Providing consultative services to scientific and technical personnel pertaining to the selection and use of animal models.
  • Assisting in development, design or evaluation of animal research protocols and animal holding facilities and performing in-depth evaluation of the relationships of animal disease to research programs.
  • Participating in the weekend/holiday on-call rotation with other veterinarians for all species which presently includes non-human primates, rodents, and aquatics.
  • Work may involve the use of potentially hazardous materials or may be located in areas where such materials are used.
  • Work may require the use of personal protective equipment and adherence to strict safety protocols.
Basic Qualifications
  • Graduation from a veterinary school accredited by the AVMA (e.g. D.V.M. or V.M.D.) or satisfactory completion of the foreign equivalency examination (passing grade) given by the AVMA. ACLAM board certification is required. Foreign degrees must be evaluated for U.S. equivalency.
  • License to practice veterinary medicine in the U.S. and ability to obtain Maryland licensure.

  • In addition to the education requirement, a minimum of four (4) years of progressively responsible experience, including two (2) years of experience in a leadership/manager capacity.
  • Must be able to function independently in an animal research facility environment, and support investigators engaged in animal research.
  • Experience with non-human primate medical care and use.
  • Experience with colony health monitoring for rodent, NHP, and aquatic species.
  • Independently identify and evaluate animal health issues, provide clinical diagnoses, therapeutics and care for research animals.
  • Identification of regulatory/compliance issues and the ability to work with the IACUC and veterinary staff to resolve issues.
  • Possess a detailed comprehension of regulatory requirements and AAALAC standards.
  • This position is considered safety-sensitive and will be subject to random drug testing per the Leidos Biomedical Research Drug Free Workplace Program.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance.
Preferred Qualifications
  • ACLAM Board Certification or eligibility to take the ACLAM board exam.
  • IACUC Experience.
  • Experience with surgical procedures in nonhuman primates.
  • Experience with rodent surgical models used in cancer research.
  • Experience in training personnel including investigators and technicians.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and the demonstrated ability to interact effectively with others.
  • USDA Accreditation.
