Job Description:

KEEN Greater DC is a nonprofit organization that provides one-to-one recreational opportunities for children and young adults with developmental and physical disabilities at no cost to their families. Established in 1992 in Montgomery County, MD, KEEN’s mission is to empower youth with disabilities and impact volunteer coaches through participation in free, non-competitive, one-on-one programs of physical activity, supporting the overall well-being of all participants.

KEEN Greater DC programs run in Maryland, District of Columbia and Virginia.

KEEN Greater DC seeks a Full-Time Development Director to work with the Executive Director and the Board of Directors to enhance the financial success of KEEN through effective planning and execution of all resource development strategies and events.

Position Summary

The Development Director is a senior leadership position with KEEN Greater DC responsible for planning, implementing, and managing KEEN’s fundraising and development strategy. This role balances strategic leadership with hands-on fundraising execution, overseeing individual giving, corporate sponsor ships, special events, and donor stewardship.

The Development Director works closely with the Executive Director, Board of Directors, and a small team to build sustainable revenue, strengthen donor relationships, and support the organization’s mission and long-term financial health.

Key Responsibilities

Fundraising Strategy & Leadership

  • Annually develop and execute strategy that supports organizational priorities and revenue goals
  • Establish and monitor fundraising benchmarks, and reports progress and effectiveness
  • Identify new revenue opportunities and diversify funding streams
  • Uphold ethical fundraising practices and ensure compliance with professional standards

Individual Giving

  • Manage and grow a portfolio of major donors and prospects
  • Build strategy to cultivate, solicit, and steward individual donors through personalized engagement
  • Engage along with Executive Director and Board members on donor cultivation and solicitations

Special Events

  • Provide strategic oversight for fundraising events (KEENFest gala and auction, Golf Classic, Casino Night), including budgeting, revenue targets, and donor engagement
  • Collaborate with Special Event Manager and volunteers to ensure events are well-planned, mission-aligned, and financially successful

Donor Stewardship & Communications

  • Oversee donor stewardship plans, including acknowledgments and communications
  • Work with senior staff to align fundraising messaging with organizational branding
  • Ensure accurate donor data management and reporting in the Bloomerang and Greater Giving (CRM system) databases
  • Collaborate with the Grant Director to strategically identify, cultivate, and submit foundation, corporate, and government grant opportunities

Board & Admin Engagement

  • Engage Board members in fundraising initiatives as appropriate
  • Lead and mentor a small development team and external consultants, fostering collaboration and accountability
  • Oversee overall development operations
  • Help with developing and monitoring the annual development budget
Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in nonprofit management or Bachelor’s degree with equivalent professional experience
  • Minimum of 5–7 years of progressively responsible experience in nonprofit development
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Knowledge of donor databases/CRMs and fundraising analytics
  • Excellent organizational and project management skills
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment
  • Strategic thinking and results-oriented leadership
  • Experience working closely with Boards, senior leadership, and volunteers
  • Strong interpersonal and organizational skills, demonstrated initiative, detail-oriented with the ability to set priorities and handle multiple tasks and deadlines
  • High level of professionalism, integrity, and discretion
Work Environment & Expectations

While this full-time position operates remotely, the candidate must be based in Washington DC, Maryland or Virginia, as there are frequent in-person meetings and events. Candidate must have their own vehicle for local transportation.

Some evenings and weekends required for donor meetings and events.

Compensation & Benefits

Competitive salary commensurate with experience (Salary range: $95,000–$105,000).

This position oversees one staff person, the Special Event Manager.
