Manager of Data Engineering​/Azure​/Bethesda, MD

Our client, a well-established insurance company based in Bethesda, Maryland, is seeking a Manager of Data Engineering for a full-time opportunity. This is a high-impact role for a technically strong leader who can manage a small team while remaining hands‑on in the delivery of modern data solutions. The ideal candidate will have deep experience with Azure SQL, Azure Data Factory (ADF), and a strong grasp of data engineering best practices in cloud environments.

In this role, you will be responsible for both managing and mentoring a small team of data engineers, while also contributing directly to the design and implementation of scalable data pipelines and architecture. The breakdown is approximately 50% hands‑on technical work and 50% management and strategic oversight. This is an excellent opportunity for someone who enjoys working in a hybrid leadership role within a growing, data‑driven organization in the insurance sector.

This is a hybrid opportunity in Bethesda, MD, requiring 2 days per week in-office.

• Proven experience managing a small data engineering or data platform team
• Strong expertise in Azure SQL and Azure Data Factory (ADF)
• Solid understanding of core data engineering principles (ETL, data modeling, pipeline architecture)
• Ability to contribute directly to technical design and implementation

• Managing and mentoring a small team of data engineers
• Splitting time 50% hands‑on (coding, architecture, implementation) and 50% management (planning, reviews, stakeholder communication)
• Overseeing the development and optimization of scalable, cloud‑based data pipelines
• Collaborating with cross‑functional teams including analytics, product, and engineering
