Occupational Therapist – Physical Disabilities
Full Time Contract
GLC On-The-Go is seeking an Occupational Therapist with experience with Physical Disabilities for a full-time contract. This position is located at the NIH Clinical Center (CC), National Institutes of Health (NIH) in Bethesda, Maryland. The NIH Clinical Center is the largest hospital in the world totally dedicated to translational clinical research. The hospital maintains a 200-bed inpatient capacity with 18 outpatient clinics (including 3 day hospitals) to support the intramural research programs of the 17 Institutes and Centers with clinical programs on the NIH Bethesda campus.
WORK SCHEDULE
The schedule is Monday-Friday 8a-4:30p (hours can be somewhat flexible) for a total of 40 hours per week.
On rare occasions, Occupational Therapist may need to work on a holiday or weekend.
MAJOR DUTIES
Participates in the development of occupational therapy methodologies and techniques, including assessment tools and experimental or nonstandard occupational therapy interventions. Evaluates effectiveness of new and established treatments and modifies as necessary to meet requirements of constantly changing, complex biomedical and psychosocial research participants.
Serves as an Associate Investigator (Al) on institute generated protocols or as a Principal Investigator (Pl) for occupational therapy originated protocols.
Serves as a mentor to occupational therapists to identify needs for occupational therapy research. Collaborates with other disciplines and occupational therapists in the evaluation of occupational therapy research projects.
Provides specialized occupational therapy care to individual patients or patient groups, particularly with terminal illnesses, cancer, auto immune and arthritis diagnosis. Assesses the actual and probable physical and psychosocial condition of the patient/patient group according to the Model of Human Occupation incorporating information about levels of function from components associated with performance (motor skills, problem solving/planning skills and interpersonal/communication skills), habituation (roles, habits and routines) and motivation (performance in environment, values and interests).
Uses standardized tests and outcome measurements to document clinical findings or research interventions.
Plans for patient care utilizing multi-disciplinary and intra-disciplinary approaches and integrating data from a variety of sources. Predicts behavior of clients in response to illness, its treatment, and occupational therapy interventions consisting of but not limited to Activities of Daily Living (ADL), mood and cognitive therapy, community reintegration, assistive device training, upper extremity rehabilitation with hand specialty, edema management, orthotic design and fabrication, joint protection/energy conservation training, infant and early childhood developmental assessment and training, neuromuscular facilitation/inhibition including kinesiotaping, visual and perceptual motor interventions, therapeutic exercise, muscle re-education, mental health intervention with specialty in disability assessment, community living skills training, vocational/avocational exploration through a simulated work experience, and fine and gross motor coordination strategies.
Implements the occupational therapy care plan and collaborates with other health care professionals. Provides for continuity of patient care through the occupational therapy process, including discharge planning. Ensures all required information and activities (occupational therapy care plan, medical history, medical data, etc.) are properly documented utilizing standardized methods.
