Position Overview

HJF is seeking a Medical Technician to perform a wide range of administrative and clerical duties. The role serves as Scheduling Coordinator, Receptionist, Template Manager, and Appointments Coordinator for the Hematology Oncology Clinic at the John P. Murtha Cancer Center (MCC) located in Walter Reed National Military Medical Center (WRNMMC), Bethesda, MD. Responsibilities include front‑desk operations, data quality management, patient coordination, and support of clinical trial administration.

Responsibilities
  • The incumbent implements policies and procedures for front desk operations. Answers phones, takes and delivers messages, provides information to callers, and resolves appointment scheduling problems.
  • Initiates and performs clerical, record keeping, and miscellaneous duties required for the proper and timely treatment and care of patients. Assists with scheduling clinical trial patients and coordinating care for clinical trial patients.
  • Utilizes an in‑depth knowledge of the clinic’s mission to prepare reports based on specified requirements and intended data use. Runs recurring and special reports within automated systems to provide quantitative data for operational decisions.
  • Provides data as necessary to complete routine, recurring, and special data calls from leadership.
  • Receives all patients, determines disposition (e.g., proceed to laboratory, retrieve additional information), selects appropriate forms, and determines required laboratory tests or x‑rays based on established guidelines.
  • Maintains the clinic patient appointment schedule for physicians.
  • Responsible for screening laboratory, x‑ray, and other clinical test results to ensure physicians are notified of abnormal results within a defined timeframe.
  • Prepares and coordinates all consult and referral appointments to ensure proper patient care and collaborates with other physicians and clinics to avoid administrative delays.
  • Oversees and follows up on ordered tests and patient referrals to ensure results are received, recorded, and filed according to quality assurance procedures.
  • Reviews incoming and outgoing correspondence for accuracy and makes appropriate changes based on guidelines.
  • Independently performs procedures required to analyze and interpret human bone marrow aspirate and core samples as part of the Hematology Oncology service for clinical research and patient care.
  • May perform other duties as assigned or directed by the supervisor, including required training participation.
Education and Experience
  • Associate’s degree required; bachelor’s degree preferred.
  • Minimum of 0–2 years’ experience required.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Thorough knowledge of clinic procedures and regulations to manage appointments, assemble medical records, record test results, relay patient information, compile data, schedule follow‑ups, and resolve scheduling issues. Customer service is a priority.
  • Knowledge of facility services, medical terminology, and procedures common to each service for accurate test reporting and patient instruction.
  • Familiarity with other departments’ procedures to advise referred patients and physicians.
  • Knowledge of proper grammar, punctuation, and spelling.
  • Excellent communication skills; ability to type at least 60 words per minute and operate word processors and computers.
  • Experience in a clinical setting.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a T3 secret clearance.
Physical Capabilities
  • Ability to stand or sit at a computer for prolonged periods.
