Job Summary
The Medical Physicist provides specialized physics support for radiation oncology services by supporting advanced radiation therapy procedures, treatment planning, equipment acceptance testing, quality assurance, and emergency oncology cases while collaborating closely with physicians, dosimetrists, and clinical staff. The Medical Physicist also supports training, quality improvement initiatives, and coordination of care to ensure safe, accurate, and effective radiation treatment delivery.
Required Qualifications- Education:
- Master’s Degree in Medical Physics, Physics, or related engineering or physical science disciplines and at least two years of working in radiation therapy physics documented by a physicist certified by the American Board of Medical Physics or American Board of Radiology.
- Subspecialty certification as a Medical Physicist by one or more of:
The American Board of Medical Physics in Radiation Oncology Physics;
The American Board of Radiology in either Therapeutic Radiological Physics or Radiological Physics;
The Canadian College of Physics in Medicine.
- Certifications: Basic Life Support (BLS).
- Experience: 24 months proficiency as a Medical Physicist within the preceding 40 months; 24 months experience in treating with IMRT including familiarity with modulation techniques and systems, patient immobilization and data acquisition, treatment planning, QA procedures, dosimetry film QA validation techniques for IMRT plans; supervisory clinical experience as a Medical Physicist for at least 24 continuous months within the preceding 36 months.
- Read, write, speak and understand English to communicate with patients and health care providers.
- Identify and use necessary equipment and supplies properly and communicate proper use with nurses, medical staff, patients, and family members.
- Teach patients appropriate self‑care and motivate patients and family members to continue procedures for promoting rapid healing.
- Assess, coordinate, facilitate, deliver and evaluate care for patients ages infant to geriatric using patient population appropriate principles.
- Possess knowledge of wide range medical disorders, diagnostic studies and treatments related to prevention and detection of illnesses in adults.
- Perform professional duties using basic word processing, data entry and automated medical records.
- U.S. citizen.
Monday–Friday 8:00 am–4:30 pm at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center.
