Overview
Under direction of the school principal and special education supervisor, the special education teacher provides direct instruction and instructional support to students with disabilities and works in collaboration with the general education teacher. Monitors and evaluates outcomes for students with disabilities. Assists in the development of Individualized Education Programs (IEP).

Required to attend school meetings, programs, and activities outside the instructional day as mandated by the Montgomery County Education Association agreement. - Courses:
Teachers employed in special education schools or discrete special education service models are required to successfully complete specific MCPS-provided courses designed to meet the needs of students with disabilities, including behavioral management with nonviolent crisis interventions. - Behavioral Interventions:
Teachers in identified schools and programs will be required to support behavioral interventions.

Knowledge Skills AbilitiesKnowledge of the Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) curriculum for the grade/content range of the position, MCPS special education program. Thorough knowledge of IEP, learning theory, differentiated instruction, data collection, best instructional practices, research-based reading instruction, multicultural education, assessments. Thorough knowledge in methods of teaching elementary math if seeking an elementary position. Knowledge of ESSA (2015), IDEA (2004), and state and federal policies and procedures related to special education.
Ability to provide instructional support. Works well with students with disabilities, teachers, and parents/guardians of students with disabilities. Ability to appropriately adapt instructional programs and materials. Excellent communication skills. Knowledge of and the ability to apply the six performance standards established for the MCPS Teacher Professional Growth System (TPGS).
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in special education. Fluent in learning theory, differentiated instruction, developmental reading, child development, applied behavior analysis, and assessment required. Student teaching in the specific area of exceptionality or two years of teaching experience at the level appropriate to assignment (elementary or secondary). Other combinations of applicable education, training, and experience may be considered.
Certificate/License:
Meets Maryland State Department of Education certification requirements for Standard Professional Certification I (SPC I) in special education. Certification in a content area is desirable.
