Position Summary
In collaboration with the Chief Development Officer, the Director of Development, Institutional Giving leads the organization’s grant strategy and execution, with a focus on securing multi-year, multi-million-dollar funding from federal agencies, foundations, and institutional funders. This role serves as the senior, hands-on proposal writer for the organization’s most complex and strategic funding opportunities while overseeing grant operations, compliance, and external grant consultants.
Key Responsibilities- Grant Strategy & Relationship Development
- Build and manage working relationships with major institutional funders to support multiyear, high-dollar grant/proposal opportunities.
- In coordination with the CDO, develop and manage the organization’s Centers’ fundraising plans as they relate to grants, proposals and institutional funding.
- Identify, prioritize, and initiate appropriate letters of inquiry (LOIs) aligned with strategic priorities.
- Proposal Development & Writing
- Serve as the senior, hands-on writer and reviewer for major corporate and private foundation proposals.
- Lead proposal strategy, narrative development, budgeting coordination, and internal approvals for complex submissions.
- Ensure all proposals meet funder guidelines, internal quality standards, and submission deadlines.
- Federal Grants Leadership
- Provide subject-matter expertise in federal grant writing and grants management.
- Oversee compliance requirements, reporting obligations, and postaward stewardship for federal awards.
- Coordinate with program, finance, and compliance teams to ensure accurate and timely grant management.
- Institutional Giving Operations & Portfolio Management
- In coordination with the CDO, and Director Development Operations, develop and direct institutional giving operations, systems, and workflows.
- Maintain and manage a comprehensive portfolio of prospective institutional donors, grants (research/LOI stage), active grants, and grants in stewardship or compliance phases.
- Ensure adherence to institutional giving-related SOPs across the organization.
- External Consultant Oversight
- In coordination with the CDO, manage the organization’s relationship with external grants consultants.
- Oversee consultant scopes of work, deliverables, and performance to ensure alignment with internal priorities.
- Bachelor’s degree required
- 7–10 years of progressive experience in institutional giving, grant writing, grants management, including significant federal grant experience.
- Demonstrated success securing multiyear, six- and/or seven-figure awards.
- Experience with CRMs (e.g. Salesforce, Hub Spot, Blackbaud, Raiser’s Edge)
- Exceptional writing, editing, and project management skills.
- Strong ability to work cross-functionally with program, finance, and executive leadership.
- Prior experience managing direct reports and teams.
- Deep knowledge of grant compliance, reporting, and stewardship best practices.
- Use of Generative AI for effectiveness and efficiency.
- Experience using project management tools (e.g. Asana).

Salary: $137,000-$178,000
