About the Opportunity
Guided Search Partners (GSP) is an Executive Search firm built on Trust, Transparency, Specialization, and Long-term Relationships. We connect high-performing professionals with organizations that value people, performance, and growth—helping leaders find roles where they can make an impact and build meaningful careers.
We’re partnering with a long-standing construction organization in the DMV known for delivering complex work across sectors like multifamily, education, life sciences, corporate interiors, hospitality, healthcare, and more. This Accounting Manager opportunity is open because the current leader is retiring in the coming months—and it’s also a deliberate step forward: the team is ready to elevate the function with stronger leadership, sharper oversight, and more “accounting firepower” across payroll, AP, and reporting.
If you’re the kind of accounting leader who likes being close to the work, building strong processes, and coaching a team while staying grounded in day-to-day execution, you’ll feel at home here.
What You’ll Do- Lead the day-to-day accounting operations across AP, AR, payroll, job costing, and general accounting, bringing structure and momentum to a busy, high-volume environment.
- Oversee payroll and the majority of accounts payable, while supporting key financial reporting needs for leadership.
- Drive consistent, accurate close processes—month-end and year-end—so the organization stays audit-ready and decision-ready.
- Prepare and review financial reporting packages, variance analysis, and operational insights that help leadership stay ahead of the business.
- Strengthen internal controls, policies, and workflows—protecting assets while improving speed and clarity.
- Supervise and develop the accounting team: coaching, feedback, performance support, and guidance tied to compensation and growth.
- Partner with stakeholders across the company to ensure accurate job cost tracking, expense allocation, and alignment to contract terms.
- Help optimize and leverage the company’s systems and integrations (Sage 300 and tools supporting construction accounting workflows).
- Support compliance needs including audits, tax-related filings, and GAAP-aligned practices—always “above board,” with leadership that respects the craft.
You’re a true accounting professional—someone who can step into the details when needed but also lead people and elevate standards. You’ve actually supervised a team (not just carried the title), and you’re comfortable giving feedback, developing talent, and helping others perform at a higher level. You bring a steady mix of accountability and support, and you don’t wait for problems to become fires.
You’ve seen construction accounting in the real world (GC or subcontractor is fine), and you understand what it takes to keep payroll, payables, job costing, and reporting accurate and moving.
Preferred Experience & Attributes- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
- 8+ years of progressive accounting experience, ideally within construction
- Prior experience supervising a small team (coaching, feedback, performance, compensation input)
- Construction accounting knowledge such as WIP, percentage-of-completion concepts, AIA billing, bonding, and job costing
- Comfort across AP, AR, payroll, GL, and general accounting—you know how it all connects
- Experience in organizations $50M+ (scale and complexity matters)
- Proficiency with accounting systems (Sage 300 preferred) and strong Excel skills
- CPA and/or public accounting experience are nice-to-haves, not requirements
- Open to candidates from subcontractor organizations with the right foundation and leadership capability
This is a pivotal “lift the function” hire. You’ll help shape how the accounting team operates as the company grows—tightening execution, strengthening oversight, and building the kind of internal credibility that makes everything smoother across the business. You’ll have a seat close to leadership, meaningful visibility, and the chance to build a stronger team foundation for the future.
Reporting Structure- Reports to:
Controller - Team environment includes Controller, Accounting Manager role (this position), Accounting Coordinator (AP), two Project Accountants, and a role split between GL and project accounting
- High-collaboration role with internal stakeholders and leadership
