Position Overview

The Analytical Laboratory Technician – XRD / Chemistry supports laboratory operations by performing a combination of X-ray diffraction (XRD) analyses and routine analytical chemistry testing. Approximately 50% of the role is dedicated to XRD sample preparation, instrument operation, and data analysis, while the remaining 50% involves chemistry and instrumental analytical techniques. This position requires strong technical skills, attention to detail, and adherence to laboratory quality and safety standards.

Key Characteristics

XRD Responsibilities (~50%)

• Prepare solid samples for XRD analysis, including powders, pressed pellets, etc.
• Operate XRD (Siemens D5000) instrumentation, perform routine calibrations, and verify instrument performance.
• Collect, process, and interpret XRD data using approved software for phase identification and analysis.
• Troubleshoot routine XRD instrument or sample issues and solve problems as needed.
• Document XRD procedures, results, and observations in laboratory notebooks and LIMS.
• Assist with XRD method development, validation, and continuous improvement efforts.

Analytical Chemistry Responsibilities (~50%)

• Performs both routine and specialized sample preparation and analysis of organic and inorganic materials (excluding biological).
• Following ASTM and Industry Standards, using ICP-MS, Analytical Balances, Sulfur Analyzers, Mercury Analyzers, Plastometers, Wet Chemistry, etc.
• Routinely meet all of the QA/QC requirements for the analyses performed.
• Qualify through performance of an initial DOC and annual recertification for the analyses performed
• Perform sample analysis in a timely fashion, meeting any applicable analytical holding times and project due dates.
• Keep accurate documentation on all sample data and analytical conditions under which it was performed.

Quality, Safety & Compliance

• Follow all laboratory safety policies, including chemical hygiene and radiation safety requirements.
• Comply with laboratory quality systems (e.g., ISO/IEC 17025) and document work in accordance with SOPs.
• Maintain a clean, organized laboratory environment and properly manage chemicals, samples, and waste.

Qualifications and Experience

• Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, Materials Science, Physics, Geology, or a related scientific discipline.
• 5yr experience with XRD principles and operation.
• Prior experience with XRD data interpretation and analytical chemistry instrumentation.
• Experience supporting client-driven or contract laboratory work.

Work Schedule

• Full-time, onsite position.
• Daytime shift
• Occasional overtime or schedule flexibility may be required based on workload.
