Our Role and Team

Join the Risk Screening & Steering Tooling team (Dime) in Zalando Payments Risk Management department and take a high-leverage engineering role where your work directly influences the commercial success of the Zalando Group. Our team builds a sophisticated ecosystem of fraud detection and prevention tooling that optimizes workflows for manual screeners and profilers, while feeding high-quality data to our machine learning models.

You will own building and operating critical infrastructure that spans from annotating orders for signs of fraudulent behavior to managing late order cancellations. By reducing financial losses and supporting broader risk assessment strategies, you will see a direct link between your daily work and the company’s financial health.

Responsibilities
  • Build and maintain scalable event-driven backend systems using Java and Nakadi/Kafka to detect and prevent fraud, ensuring high performance and reliability of services for customers.
  • Collaborate with Product Managers and Principal Engineers to translate business requirements into technical solutions, contribute to architectural discussions, and decompose large epics into manageable tasks.
  • Take ownership of the full software lifecycle, utilize AI and automation to streamline workflows and improve code health, and integrate with broader internal systems and front-ends.
  • Deliver secure, compliant solutions that adhere to GDPR or DORA regulations, protecting customers and the company’s bottom line.
  • Spearhead documentation and knowledge sharing to foster continuous improvement and usability and extensibility.
Qualifications
  • You have 3+ years of experience building and operating high-quality, scalable backend services using the Java (Spring Boot) ecosystem, AWS, and Kubernetes in a cloud-native environment. Proficiency in data storage (Elasticache, Dynamo

    DB, Postgre

    SQL) and full-text search (Solr) is desirable.
  • Experience designing event-driven microservices and RESTful APIs, and writing well-structured, observable, maintainable code covered by automated tests deployed to production in small, safe iterations.
  • Strong communication with product managers and engineering peers to clarify requirements, proactively resolving ambiguity and solving complex technical challenges.
  • Ability to support the team’s growth through constructive feedback in code reviews and active knowledge sharing.
  • Customer-centric mindset and pragmatism, taking ownership of solutions to deliver tangible business value.
  • Proactive, self-driven mindset with passion for continuous learning and improving workflows.
