Program

Overview

The Insight Housing Meals Program serves nutritious and delicious meals to people who are experiencing food and/or housing insecurity. The program operates two kitchen sites: the Hope Center in Berkeley, which serves 3 meals per day to the 32-bed Men’s Shelter and 12-bed Veterans Transitional Housing program, and the Dwight Way Center, which serves 3 meals per day to the 32-bed Women’s Shelter, 26-bed Veterans Transitional Housing program, and 15-bed Board & Care.

During the weekdays, the Hope Center also provides a sit-down Community Meal for over 100 diners. Meals are also delivered to other residential programs in Berkeley.

Position Summary

Under the supervision of the Meals Program Manager, the Meals Program Supervisor is responsible for the day-to-day supervision of kitchen staff and operations, including overseeing and actively participating in meal preparation and service across Insight Housing’s Meals Program sites. This includes serving the Hope Center’s Men’s Shelter, Veterans Transitional Housing, and Community Meals Program, as well as the Dwight Way Center’s Women’s Shelter, Veterans Transitional Housing program, and Board & Care.

The Supervisor will directly supervise Cook and Kitchen Assistant staff while maintaining an equal role in hands-on cooking and kitchen operations. This exempt, supervisory role that includes formal staff oversight and administrative accountability.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities Supervision and Staff Management
  • 1) Directly supervise Meals Program Cook(s) and Kitchen Assistant(s), including scheduling, day-to-day oversight, coaching, and performance management.
  • 2) Onboard and train new kitchen staff, ensuring adherence to Insight Housing policies, food safety procedures, and program standards.
  • 3) Provide guidance and support to Cook staff to ensure quality meal preparation and service; serve as acting lead in the absence of the Program Manager.
  • 4) Assist the Meals Program Manager with performance evaluations and documentation as needed.
  • 5) Supervise and direct volunteers during Community Meal service.
Meal Preparation and Kitchen Operations
  • 6) Actively participate in and oversee the preparation and service of daily meals across program sites, including the Hope Center (Men’s Shelter, Veterans Transitional Housing, and Community Meals) and the Dwight Way Center (Women’s Shelter, 26-bed Veterans Transitional Housing program, and Board & Care).
  • 7) Create and maintain weekly menus that are cost-effective, nutritious, and reflective of program needs.
  • 8) Ensure weekend Cooks are prepared with approved menus, adequate food, and all necessary supplies prior to weekend shifts.
  • 9) Conduct and oversee weekly food and supply inventory; coordinate ordering and delivery of food products.
  • 10) Ensure all food, supplies, and kitchen areas are properly secured at the end of each shift.
  • 11) Use agency vehicle to pick up needed supplies or deliver food to Insight Housing sites, including the Hope Center, Dwight Way Center, and other program locations, as needed.
  • 12) Assist with food and supply delivery, loading, unloading, and proper storage. Exercise safe lifting and moving techniques.
