Berkeley’s College of Chemistry is widely regarded as the #1 global university in chemistry, with graduate and undergraduate rankings that place its two departments – Chemistry and Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering – among the world’s best. Founded in 1872, the college unites chemistry, chemical biology, and chemical & biomolecular engineering, fostering interdisciplinary collaboration and discovery. Faculty and students have received 18 Nobel Prizes, including recent awards in 2018, 2020, 2021, 2022, and a 2025 award.
Position OverviewThe Senior Assistant Dean of College Relations & Development reports directly to the Dean of the College and is part of the College’s senior leadership team and the University’s Campaign Management Team with a dotted line to the AVC, Constituent Programs in University Development and Alumni Relations (UDAR). The role sets strategic direction for all College Relations & Development activities, leads a team of eight full‑time professionals (including the Senior Assistant Dean), and manages an operational budget of $1.8 million.
The position is accountable for securing over $30 million in new gifts and commitments annually, supporting capital projects, fellowships, new faculty positions, the undergraduate experience, and diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives.

Responsibilities- Develop and execute strategic plans for fundraising campaigns, alumni and donor events, outreach programs, and communication initiatives.
- Lead a team of seven full‑time development professionals and related administrative support staff.
- Manage donor cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship efforts, collaborating with faculty and frontline fundraisers to advance philanthropic goals.
- Oversee the College’s Advisory Board and maintain a personal portfolio of principal major‑gift donors.
- Ensure compliance with applicable laws, regulations, and institutional policies in all development activities.
- Drive revenue generation and pursue innovative fundraising opportunities to achieve and exceed goals.
- Excellent knowledge of fundraising, donor relations, and public relations, including applicable laws and regulations.
- Demonstrated experience implementing and leading successful fundraising campaigns.
- Expertise in identification, cultivation, and solicitation strategies, including gift planning.
- Strong strategic planning, analytical, problem‑solving, and persuasive skills.
- Ability to expand revenue opportunities beyond traditional approaches.
- Deep understanding or ability to quickly learn UC Berkeley and the College of Chemistry’s context, goals, and challenges.
- Knowledge of science and engineering concepts and a passion for basic science.
- Proficiency in leadership and management concepts, techniques, and best practices.
- Ability to select, train, mentor, evaluate, and motivate staff.
- Consensus‑building skills to develop collegial relationships with diverse groups.
- Excellent written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills, including political acumen.
- Proven ability to guide and motivate volunteers and board members.
- Creativity in devising tailored strategies for prospects and situations.
- Critical thinking, persuasion, negotiation, and marketing skills.
- Capacity to work under pressure, manage competing interests, maintain flexibility, and adapt to change.
- Bachelor’s degree in a related area and/or equivalent experience or training.
