Responsibilities

The Associate Director reports to the Executive Director of the Energy Institute at Haas (EI). The Associate Director independently manages the financial and research administration operations of the Energy Institute and the Strauch Cleantech to Market program. In collaboration with the Faculty Directors and Executive Director, the Associate Director engages in and supports outreach efforts to policymakers, governmental agencies and funding entities.

The Associate Director provides project management to multiple research projects and manages the acquisition and oversight of all confidential research data.

  • Administers the Energy Institute at Haas with primary responsibility for administrative research and programmatic activities, including all finance, human resources, contracts and grants responsibilities for the unit and for the Strauch Cleantech to Market (C2M) program.
  • Hires all staff, graduate student researchers and affiliated researchers for research projects.
  • Manages grant and non‑grant funds to ensure they are compliant with all applicable rules.
  • Creates grant fund projections and advises faculty on acceptable uses.
  • Works with Faculty Affiliates to develop research proposals.
  • Creates funding mechanisms for training courses and POWER conferences.
  • Determines appropriate funding mechanisms for non‑grant funds. Works with central campus to process funds.
  • Manages the Energy Institute's budgeting and accounting processes to support a self‑sustaining financial infrastructure of the research program.
  • Manages C2M and Berkeley Energy and Resources Collaborative (BERC) finances also.
  • Determines funding sources to pay EI and C2M staff.
  • Provides budget forecasts to Haas and EI leadership.
  • Implements major EI programs such as the Energy and Environmental Economics (EEE) Mentorship Program and Grad Camp; assists faculty with implementation of other programs, such as Energy Camp.
  • Assesses programs’ effectiveness, and recommends changes to program content, policies and procedures accordingly.
  • Communicates with funders on administrative matters.
  • Authors reports to funders.
  • Initiate data requests with utilities and other organizations.
  • Work with Industrial Alliance Office, Committee for the Protection of Human Subjects (CPHS), and Secure Research Data Computing (SRDC) management to secure data and manage data storage and access.
  • Actively contributes to a team environment that fosters and promotes a culture of belonging for all, within the unit and mplifies Haas’ four Defining Leadership Principles: (1) Question the status quo; (2) Confidence without attitude; (3) Students always; and (4) Beyond yourself.
  • Completes required training on time and engages in opportunities for learning pertinent to the position or at the suggestion of the supervisor.
