Position Description

The Social Enterprise Clinic seeks applications for a Clinical Supervising Attorney position. Under the supervision of the Clinic Director, the Supervising Attorney’s general responsibilities include training and supervising students in client representation; working on the Clinic’s docket of projects and cases, developing and managing four or more client projects per semester independently (i.e., without a co‑supervisor); and performing varied administrative and other tasks to assist in the Clinic’s and Berkeley Clinical Program’s operation.

The Social Enterprise Clinic is a transactional law clinic that requires students to critically examine issues of racial and economic justice to achieve their entity client goals. The Clinic serves as outside counsel for social enterprise businesses—for‑profit and nonprofit companies that use market‑based strategies to address social and environmental issues. The Clinic is geared to students who are interested in exploring the potential power and limitations of market‑based methods and thinking critically about the relationships between law, business, and racial equity.

The Clinic advises social enterprise clients on a variety of corporate governance, regulatory compliance, contract drafting and analysis, corporate structure, and entity formation matters. Staff work collaboratively with clients to help them minimize risks and avoid pitfalls as they achieve their social impact goals and implement their theory of change.

The Clinic is committed to preparing law students from diverse backgrounds and providing first‑rate legal representation to social enterprises providing services to disenfranchised and disempowered individuals and communities. The Berkeley Clinical Program is committed to building an equitable and inclusive faculty and staff to teach and work in a multicultural and antiracist learning environment. The law school provides support for Supervising Attorneys to attend conferences that advance their professional development goals and interests.
