Berkeley Lab's (LBNL) Joint Genome Institute (JGI) has an opening for a Bioinformatics Genomics Analyst to join the User Support Analysis Group!
In this exciting role, you will support data analysis efforts, focusing on strategically important areas of genomic technology development. You will contribute to the maintenance, optimization, and execution of analysis pipelines for both new and existing JGI user products, including single-cell RNA-seq and metabolomics analysis pipelines. You will collaborate with JGI users and researchers to fulfill custom analysis requests and support analytical initiatives aimed at scaling laboratory throughput capacity.
Reporting to the User Support Analysis Group Lead, this position leverages bioinformatics tools to process data from multiple sequencing platforms and works closely with analysts and laboratory scientists to translate complex genomic data into actionable insights. You will combine strong hands-on technical work with critical thinking skills and the ability to effectively communicate data-derived insights to a wide range of users and staff.
The JGI's mission is to provide the global research community with access to the most advanced integrative genome science capabilities in support of the DOEs research mission to solve the world's evolving energy and environmental challenges. The JGI supports projects in genome sequencing, synthesis, transcriptomics, metabolomics, and natural products in plants, fungi, algae, and microorganisms. This position is headquartered on the Lab's main site at the Integrative Genomics Building (IGB) (Virtual Tour).

What You Will Do:
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to formalize and validate the single-cell transcriptome analysis pipeline, supporting the transition from an R&D product to a production-ready service, including establishing quality control metrics, documentation standards, and user-facing reports.
- Partner with data management teams to integrate pipeline outputs into existing data storage and archival systems, ensuring seamless data transfers, accurate metadata capture, and accessible delivery of analysis results to end users.
- Support ongoing analysis of user projects across a variety of platforms and analytical pipelines.
- Contribute to group initiatives, including aligning input data retrieval for all analysis pipelines with new metadata tracking systems and standardizing workflow outputs to align with "data lakehouse" infrastructure.
- Perform targeted analyses to evaluate the impact of operational changes on data quality and experimental outcomes.
- Apply advanced knowledge of genome biology and bioinformatics to provide interpretation of genomic datasets and present findings to internal and external staff.
What is Required:
- A Bachelor's Degree (or equivalent knowledge/training) in Biology, Genomics, Computer Science or a related discipline and a minimum of 5 years of relevant experience in Bioinformatics or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Demonstrated experience with standard bioinformatics methods and tools, including sequencing databases, genome assemblers, and aligners.
- Experience with parallel computing and the analysis of high-throughput genomic datasets.
- Demonstrated proficiency with programming languages including Python, R, and their application to statistical analysis and data visualization.
- Strong analytical skills including the ability to identify problems, troubleshoot, and demonstrate good judgement in selecting methods and techniques for obtaining solutions.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills, including experience organizing and presenting technical information to varying audiences.
- Demonstrated interpersonal skills including experience collaborating with an interdisciplinary research team in a multi-disciplinary scientific or production environment.
Desired Qualifications:
- A Master's Degree (or equivalent knowledge/training) Bioinformatics, Computer Science or a related discipline.
- A minimum of 3 years of professional work experience in Bioinformatics
- Experience with Jupyter Notebooks, version control tools (eg., Git Hub and Git Lab), docker/singularity images, and workflow management systems such as WDL, Nextflow, and Snakemake.
