UC Berkeley’s University Health Services (UHS) is a comprehensive college health service providing accredited primary medical care, counseling and psychological services, and health promotion programs for students, faculty and staff. The Clinical Services Program includes urgent care, primary care, specialty clinics, laboratory, pharmacy, physical therapy, radiology and a medical insurance plan. Approximately 65,000 visits occur annually across primary, urgent, occupational and specialty care.
PositionSummary
Responsible for managing the operational, administrative and technical functions of a licensed pharmacy, providing pharmaceutical services to students and other eligible customers, and serving as resource for drug information. Functions as Pharmacist in Charge, meeting all CA Board of Pharmacy requirements and ensuring regulatory compliance with oversight bodies and UHS policy.
Responsibilities Operations Management- Consult with and advise medical staff on drug utilization.
- Ensure compliance with state, DEA, AAAHC, and UHS policies.
- Select vendors and oversee inspection of pharmaceutical items.
- Keep abreast of new drugs and developments.
- Establish, implement and monitor policies & procedures for pharmacy operations.
- Coordinate pharmaceutical services including purchasing, receiving, storing and dispensing.
- Chair Pharmaceutical & Therapeutics Committee and collaborate with other clinic departments.
- Maintain safe, secure environment and alert regarding potential concerns.
- Develop and monitor operational budget for revenue growth.
- Plan staff FTE, finance, human resources and space planning.
- Manage inventory according to Pharmacy & Therapeutics Committee guidelines.
- Ensure proper stock levels and timely use of drugs before expiration.
- Provide recommendations on new or existing medications to optimize patient care and cost.
- Audit inventory and financial processes to prevent billing errors.
- Advise on safe medication storage and secure handling.
- Hire, train, evaluate and discipline pharmacy staff per campus policies.
- Develop staff through coaching, mentoring and committee assignments.
- Conduct regular staff meetings and maintain minutes.
- Represent staff and unit needs at leadership committees.
- Ensure staff training and compliance with SOPs.
- Ensure prescriptions meet CA pharmacy practice laws with proper verification and counseling.
- Ensure technicians and support staff work within their legal scope.
- Maintain audit readiness for regulatory bodies.
- Create and adjust efficient staff schedules for optimal coverage and labor cost.
- Maintain records, logs, inventories and temperature logs.
- Oversee DEA controlled substance inventory and record‑keeping.
- Report discrepancies, losses or errors per regulatory standards.
- Ensure all required licenses and permits are current.
- Submit required reports to state boards and quality committees.
- Act as primary contact for inspections and audits.
- Verify accuracy of medications before dispensing.
- Evaluate medication orders for drug interactions.
- Prescribe, delegate, and coordinate care based on patient needs.
- Communicate with patients to promote outcomes.
