Departmental Overview

The Department of Recreation & Wellbeing provides competitive and recreational opportunities for students, faculty, staff and campus affiliated community members. In addition to the 30 sports clubs, the department offers a wide range of recreational activities and state of the art equipment.

Position Summary

The UC Martial Arts Program (UCMAP), under the Department of Recreational Sports, consists of more than 20 staff members and coaches and operates 6 different martial arts clubs. These 6 clubs include more than 500 student‑athletes who participate in the various sports programs, and compete at the US National Collegiate Championships annually. We are currently seeking an Assistant Coach/Coordinating Instructor for the Taekwondo club.

The Martial Arts Instructors in Judo, Karate, Taekwondo, Taichi, Wushu, & Yongmudo are responsible for overseeing all aspects of the Martial Arts Club under the UC Martial Arts Program. This includes teaching and managing student‑athletes, recruiting, coaching, and developing objectives and strategies for a successful program.

Responsibilities
  • Teaches martial arts trainings at practices and competitive events.
  • Assumes responsibility for building a nationally competitive martial arts team through successful recruiting and retention of high‑level student‑athletes.
  • Collaborates with Athletic Trainers, Assistant Coaches, and Strength and Conditioning Coaches to design both academic year (in season and out‑of‑season) and summer conditioning programs.
  • Proposes budgets, reconciles expenses, and proposes purchases for sports program.
  • Operates program within the approved budget guidelines.
  • In conjunction with various units within the athletic department, participate in donor meetings and events, participate in public relations activities, and monitor both individual and team academic performance to ensure that academic requirements are met.
  • Serve as key liaison to the broader UC Martial Arts Program community, engaging in alumni, fund raising and other key stakeholder activities.
  • May work in youth camps, fitness, and outdoor programs.
Required Qualifications
  • Must be a recognized junior instructor with a minimum of two (2) years of teaching experience.
  • Must demonstrate advanced interpersonal, motivational, and team leadership skills.
