Position: Camp Staff Supervisor (Non-Career)

The City of Berkeley invites you to apply for the position of Camp Staff Supervisor (Non-Career) in the Parks, Recreation and Waterfront Department! In this role, you will have the opportunity to interact with campers, supervise daily operations of one or more essential functions, and supervise and train camp staff.

You will be provided with room and board while at camp.

Camps

Our two overnight camps are located near South Lake Tahoe (Echo Lake Camp) and Yosemite (Tuolumne Camp). Camp staff work a Monday‑Saturday schedule during various camp programs that run from mid‑June to late August.

Qualifications

A typical way of gaining the knowledge, skills, and abilities for this position is:
Completion of high school or the equivalent, plus one summer or season of progressively responsible experience in leading organized recreational or educational programs; or municipal recreation family camp programs; or volume food preparation in commercial, institutional or related industries; or an administrative, retail or cash‑handling occupation. Valid food handler’s license is required for food service assignments.

  • Must be willing to work a flexible schedule, which may include early mornings and evenings.
  • When driving on City business, maintenance of a valid California driver’s license and satisfactory driving record is required.
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds.
Legal and Safety Requirements

California Public Resources Code Section 5164 prohibits the hiring of a person for employment at a park or recreational facility in a position having supervisory or disciplinary authority over any minor if the person has been convicted of certain criminal offenses. California Education Code Section 10911.5 requires that all public recreation program employers must fingerprint all persons having direct contact with a minor.

The City does not hire persons who have been convicted of felony drug, sexual assault or physical assault crimes.
