Salary range: The UC academic salary scales set the minimum pay current full‑time salary range for Lecturer positions is $75,301 – $199,722. Starting salary is commensurate with highest degree, teaching experience, and equity within the department. TSP hourly rate: $65.
Percent time: 8% to 100% (Lecturer only). 1–40 hours per week (Lecturer and TSP). TSP positions are part‑time and paid on an hourly basis depending on need.
Anticipated start dates: January 1, June 15, July 1, and August 1.
Position duration: One semester or one academic year.
Position DescriptionThe Jacobs Institute for Design Innovation in the College of Engineering at UC Berkeley seeks qualified temporary instructors to teach undergraduate courses, graduate courses, and/or special topics workshops in the Fall, Spring, and Summer terms. Applicants must list their specializations to enable appropriate evaluation as course needs arise; presence in the pool does not guarantee a position.
Lecturers supervise student design projects, give lectures, prepare assignments and project topics and deliverables, hold regular office hours, prepare exams or hold reviews, give design advice, and submit final grades.
Teacher Special Programs (TSP) instructors may: teach a short course, provide industry expertise to a lecturer, participate in design critiques, teach at Jacobs Institute boot camps or workshops, or contribute to curriculum development.
About the Jacobs InstituteMade possible by $20‑million commitment from the Paul and Stacy Jacobs Foundation, the Jacobs Institute for Design Innovation is UC Berkeley’s interdisciplinary hub for learning and making at the intersection of design and technology. The institute promotes the integration of design methodology with emerging technology to educate students who understand both technical details and societal impact.
Core programs include:
- A professional Master of Design (MDes) degree (jointly offered by the College of Engineering and College of Environmental Design).
- The Berkeley Certificate in Design Innovation, offered in partnership with the Haas School of Business, College of Letters & Science, and College of Environmental Design.
- ~15 design‑focused undergraduate and graduate courses offered in Fall, Spring, and Summer.

The institute is housed in Jacobs Hall, a 24,000‑square‑foot building equipped with design studios and advanced digital fabrication technologies.
Qualifications Basic qualifications (required at time of application)A Bachelor’s Degree ( equivalent international degree) is required.
Additional Qualifications (required at time of start)For Lecturers: five years of experience in industry or a research institute, or an advanced degree.
For TSPs: two years of experience in industry or a research institute, or an advanced degree.
Preferred QualificationsFor Lecturer positions: a higher‑level degree and/or prior teaching experience in design or engineering at the undergraduate or master’s level; a strong track record in developing and implementing innovative education methods; experience working with students from diverse disciplines.
For both Lecturer and TSP positions: experience in industry and/or a research institute in relevant subject areas.
