Position DescriptionThe Herbert Wertheim School of Optometry & Vision Science at the University of California, Berkeley seeks applications for an Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor of Clinical Optometry position with an expected start date as early as July 1, 2026. The scope of this search is broad, encompassing innovative areas of clinical eye and vision care and includes, but is not limited to, low vision, vision rehabilitation, geriatric vision.
Applications are being accepted for a full‑time faculty position from academically qualified clinicians who would be engaged in teaching, clinical service, creative activities, and university and public service.
The appointee will be expected to teach professional level courses and actively participate in clinical training and teaching programs in both the professional (Doctor of Optometry) and graduate (PhD program in Vision Science) curricula. Activity in the following areas also will be encouraged: participation in investigations in basic, applied, or clinical sciences, supervision in residency programs, organization of clinic training programs, and university and public service.
Appointees in the Professor of Clinical Optometry series are Academic Senate Faculty who may carry a heavier load of teaching and/or clinical service rather than research, as compared to appointees in the tenure track Professor series. A candidate for appointment or advancement in this series shall be judged by the following criteria: teaching, professional competence and activity, creative work, and university and public service.
The Herbert Wertheim School of Optometry & Vision Science ((Use the "Apply for this Job" box below).) has outstanding clinical facilities, a large and diverse patient population, a Clinical Research Center, and many laboratories in the Vision Science graduate program () conducting research in patient based clinical research, clinical vision science, optics, ocular biology, molecular and cell biology, perception, visual neuroscience, cognitive psychology, and computational vision. The successful candidate will also have opportunities to interact and collaborate with members of the Helen Wills Neuroscience Institute, Redwood Center for Theoretical Neuroscience, and the Departments of Bioengineering, Computer Science, Biology and Psychology, amongst others.
