The Athletic Study Center (ASC) promotes transformative academic development. Our primary support services include academic advising, academic support and academic discovery. ASC provides advising and academic support services to approximately 900 student athletes in 27 sports, employing 17 full-time staff and 60-80 part-time staff (primarily tutors).

The Learning Specialist position serves to support the academic and personal development of student athletes. This role collaborates with the Learning Specialist Coordinator, Academic Advisors, and other Learning Specialists to assess needs and coordinate specialized programs that foster independent, self-reliant learning. The incumbent must adhere to NCAA, PAC-12, and UC rules and regulations and work in a high-stress environment with visible outcomes.

Responsibilities
  • Serves as a learning specialist for a caseload of student athletes from various teams.
  • Oversees and provides academic support such as skill building, exam preparation, writing support, and related services.
  • Develops and monitors individual learning plans for students on their caseload.
  • Monitors student progress throughout each semester and communicates with tutors, reviews reports, and makes recommendations for future support.
  • Communicates with Academic Advisors to keep them informed about academic and degree progress of student athletes.
  • Assists advisors in preparing academic progress reports and collaborates on scheduling and related academic options.
  • Identifies barriers to academic success, provides referrals for additional counseling or related services as needed, and supports non-academic issue mitigation.
  • Contributes to academic support programming with the Assistant Director, including tutor education, summer course facilitation and new project development.
Required Qualifications
  • Thorough knowledge of advising and counseling techniques.
  • Knowledge of multiple majors, colleges, and schools.
  • Knowledge of learning theory and its practical application in competitive settings.
  • Knowledge of teaching and learning techniques and strategies.
  • Ability to design and execute individualized learning plans to develop academic skills (reading, research, writing and revision, note-taking, test-taking and preparation, study habits, time management).
  • Judgment and decision-making skills; problem solving abilities.
  • Ability to identify problems and develop original ideas to solve them; ability to multi-task.
  • Knowledge of NCAA rules and regulations related to academic support and integrity; current knowledge of Pacific-12 Conference rules and standards; ability to comply with these rules at all times.
  • Bachelor's degree in a related area or equivalent experience/training.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's degree highly preferred.
  • STEM background or experience providing academic support in STEM disciplines.
Salary & Benefits

This is a 2-year, full-time (40 hours/week), contract appointment, eligible for UC benefits with the possibility of extension. This is a monthly paid, exempt position. The budgeted salary range is $70,000.00 – $80,000.00.
