Position description

The University of California, Berkeley seeks a collaborative and user‑centered librarian to join a team committed to teaching emerging scholars to approach research with confidence, creativity and critical insight, empowering them to access, critically evaluate, and use information to create and distribute their own research in a technologically evolving environment.

The UC Berkeley Library is an internationally renowned research and teaching facility at the nation's premier public university. A highly diverse and intellectually rich environment, Berkeley serves a campus community of 33,070 undergraduate students, 12,812 graduate students, and 1,525 faculty. The Library comprises 20 campus libraries, including the Doe Library, the Moffitt Library, The Bancroft Library, the C.V. Starr East Asian Library, and numerous subject specialty libraries.

With a collection of more than 12 million volumes and a collections budget of over $15 million, the Library offers extensive resources in a wide variety of formats and robust services to connect users with the collections and build their research skills.

The Instruction Services Division (ISD) is a team of librarians and professional staff who provide leadership for all issues related to the Library’s educational role such as student learning, information literacy, first‑year and transfer student experience, reference and research services, assessment of teaching and learning, instructor development, and the design of physical and virtual learning environments. ISD supports course‑aligned instruction, drop‑in workshops, online guides, and individual research consultations.

The division’s work furthers the Library’s involvement in curricular initiatives and emphasizes the opportunities associated with undergraduate education. ISD cultivates liaison relationships with campus partners and academic programs.

Moffitt Library, currently under construction and scheduled to reopen in Fall of 2026, is a hub for undergraduate learners on campus. Upon reopening, it will feature a set of newly designed spaces known as the Center for Connected Learning (CCL)—a mixture of collaborative study areas, research consultation suites, an event lounge, library makerspace, and updated library classroom to more deeply engage multidisciplinary, multimodal student inquiry.

These spaces will center peer‑led education, where students learn from both peers and experts in an environment unbound by disciplines or domain expertise. The CCL is run in partnership with students, and they are empowered to influence service and space design, structure, and policies. This position has a special focus on engaging undergraduate learning communities in the CCL, fostering formal and informal learning opportunities, contributing to a student‑centered ethos, and connecting novice scholars to the Library’s wealth of resources and programs.

Responsibilities

Reporting to the Head of the Instruction Services Division (ISD), the Undergraduate Learning and Research Librarian actively participates in the Library’s reference and instructional services, providing in‑person and virtual services such as reference, research consultations; course‑integrated instruction; workshops; and helping steward the Library Prize for Undergraduate Research award committee. This librarian also collaborates with colleagues in ISD and across…
