The University of California Police Department supplies a full range of law‑enforcement services to support the academic and public‑service missions of the university. Serving a diverse community of more than 43,000 students and 14,000 faculty and staff, the department combines traditional policing with proactive educational, outreach, and crime‑prevention programs. We employ approximately 44 sworn peace officers, 70 full‑time civilian staff, and 75 part‑time students.
PositionSummary
Under general supervision, incumbents receive and relay calls for assistance via telephone, radio, and computer terminal; answer or redirect calls for information; establish priority and dispatch emergency calls; monitor, acknowledge, and enter alarm data; monitor and respond to video displays; track and document all related activities; and maintain automated and hard‑copy records. Incumbents may also handle direct citizen requests and staff mobile and remote communications command posts during special events and emergencies.
Responsibilities- Receive and dispatch calls for assistance and information; provide automated data search and entry; monitor alarm systems; document field unit activities and locations.
- Answer telephones, respond to analog and digital alarms, and operate two‑way, multi‑frequency radio equipment to communicate with police, emergency medical personnel, fire fighters, hazardous material teams, parking enforcement, community service officers, and civilian department employees.
- Assess the nature and priority of calls, assign resources, and track response and disposition on both hard copy and computerized media.
- Research and report automated and hard‑copy records; update local, state, and Federal criminal records; maintain confidentiality; develop training manuals and records; train and evaluate staff (training responsibilities reserved for designated trainers).
- Minimum qualifications include a POST‑certified 120‑hour Public Safety Dispatcher Basic Course completed within 12 months of hire, background investigation, oral‑communication evaluation, probationary period, and medical examination.
- Must pass either the POST Written Dispatch test or the Criti Call Dispatch test.
- High‑school diploma or equivalent certification, experience, and training.
Budgeted hourly range: $41.56 – $55.40. This is a full‑time (40 hrs/week), career position eligible for UC benefits and paid biweekly.
