Senior Counsel - Intellectual Property, Patents

Position Summary

The Senior Counsel will provide strategic advice and legal counsel to select business segments related to Walmart’s global patent portfolio; serve as a point of contact for patent and intellectual property matters, bringing in other legal and business stakeholders as needed; and implement legal strategy to manage the entire patent lifecycle.

You will be joining a collaborative team of talented intellectual property attorneys and professionals in an exciting, fast-paced, and dynamic environment. As a trusted business partner, you’ll advise on IP strategies to protect and advance our business in innovative technology areas such as AI, retail, and logistics solutions that will shape the future of commerce.

• Work effectively with lead counsel and other members of the IP team to serve as a point of contact for all patent and other IP related matters, such as open source and trade secrets.
• Help to manage Walmart’s global patent portfolio, including identifying inventions, reviewing invention disclosures, overseeing patent preparation and prosecution, and working cross-functionally across departments on patent licensing and enforcement efforts.
• Connect with Walmart’s business segments to develop an understanding of their product roadmaps, patent and open source priorities, and to ensure appropriate IP strategy and coverage for key initiatives.
• Work with and supervise outside counsel, patent professionals, and patent paralegals to obtain strategic patents.
• Conduct patent landscape, freedom to operate, and patentability searches.
• Perform outreach and conduct patent and IP trainings for Walmart personnel.

• Experience working with engineers and R&D personnel.
• Demonstrated ability in formulating and executing global filing strategies.
• Familiarity with IP litigation and IP provisions in tech contracts and other agreements.
• Proven IP issue spotting and decision making skills.
• Demonstrated a bias towards action and innovation.

Law degree from an accredited law school and 5 years’ experience in law. License to practice law in at least one state.
