Senior, Data Engineer

Position Overview

We are looking for an experienced data engineer with backend development experience and a growth mindset to join our Data and Customer Analytics (DCA) team. Our engineers combine creativity, curiosity, and drive to get things done. You will be a key member of the Data team and will be responsible for a wide range of analytics features, initiatives, and enhancements in the Supply Chain data domain.

Everyone has data, but the sheer volume of data at Walmart can be limitless. In the Data Engineering team, we help Walmart manage this data by building pipelines and data lakes to prepare big data for analysis and unlocking actionable insights in real-time. We also use cross‑departmental data and machine learning to build a holistic view of true profitability, saving millions of dollars across item categories and geographies while assisting our leadership in making better decisions faster.

• Data Transformation and Integration:
  Extract data from identified databases, create data pipelines, and transform data to a structure that is relevant to the problem by selecting appropriate techniques. Develop knowledge of current analytics trends.
• Data Source Identification:
  Support the understanding of the priority order of requirements and service level agreements. Identify the most suitable source for data that is fit for purpose and perform initial data quality checks on extracted data.
• Data Modeling:
  Analyze complex data elements, systems, data flows, dependencies, and relationships to contribute to conceptual, physical, and logical data models. Develop logical and physical data models including data warehouse and data mart designs; define relational tables, primary and foreign keys, and stored procedures to create a data model structure. Evaluate existing data models and physical databases for variances and discrepancies; develop efficient data flows and propose appropriate solutions for integration challenges.
• Code Development and Testing:
  Write code to develop the required solution and application features by determining the appropriate programming language and leveraging business, technical, and data requirements. Create test cases, proofs of concept, and test the code using the appropriate testing approach. Deploy software to production servers and contribute code documentation, maintain playbooks, and provide timely progress updates.
• Applied Business Acumen:
  Provide recommendations to business stakeholders to solve complex business issues. Develop business cases for projects with projected ROI or cost savings. Translate business requirements into projects, activities, and tasks and align to overall business strategy. Serve as an interpreter and conduit to connect business needs with tangible solutions and results. Recommend new processes and ways of working.
• Participate in designing data application architecture with senior architects.
• Data Governance:
  Establish, modify, and document data governance projects and recommendations. Implement data governance practices in partnership with business stakeholders and peers. Interpret company and regulatory policies on data. Educate others on data governance processes, practices, policies, and guidelines. Provide recommendations on needed updates or inputs into data governance policies, practices, or guidelines.
• Demonstrate up‑to‑date expertise and apply it to the development, execution, and improvement of action plans by providing expert advice and guidance to others. Support and align efforts to meet customer and business needs and build commitment for perspectives and rationales.
• Provide and support the implementation of business solutions by building relationships and partnerships with key stakeholders. Identify business needs, determine, and carry out necessary processes and practices.
