Position Summary
The Director of eCommerce Discovery is a senior eCommerce leader responsible for defining and executing the end-to-end vision, strategy, and roadmap for eCommerce and onsite discovery across Sam’s Club digital experiences. This role owns how Members find, explore, and engage with the assortment through personalization, AI and data-driven Member centric eCommerce experiences. This leader is responsible for driving long-term vision for personalized experience on eCommerce and has direct accountability for implementation of onsite AI applications and third‑party integrations.
The Director partners closely with eCommerce, Product, Engineering, Design, Data, Marketing, and Operations to translate Member missions and business priorities into intelligent, relevant, and scalable discovery experiences. This leader plays a critical role in Sam’s Club’s FY27 strategy, leading the transformation to personalized, AI‑driven, mission‑based discovery while ensuring operational excellence, experimentation rigor, and measurable business impact.
What you’ll do- Strategic Thinking: Ability to define a clear discovery vision and translate it into executable, multi-year roadmaps aligned to business growth and Member value.
- Ownership: Direct accountability for discovery outcomes including engagement, personalization utilization, browse performance, add‑to‑cart, and downstream conversion.
- Execution Excellence: Proven track record delivering complex, high-impact discovery initiatives across search, browse, and personalization at scale.
- Cross‑Functional Influence: Exceptional stakeholder management skills with the ability to align Product, Engineering, UX, Data Science, Marketing, and Operations without direct authority while understanding / managing business tradeoffs.
- Data‑Driven Decision Making: Deep comfort using analytics, experimentation, and insights to prioritize work, measure impact, and optimize performance.
- Technical & AI Acumen: Strong understanding of modern eCommerce discovery architectures, relevance systems, personalization platforms, and applied AI/ML (no coding required).
- Member Obsession: Deep empathy for Member missions and a relentless focus on relevance, trust, and ease of discovery across every trip.
- 10+ years of experience in digital product, eCommerce, or platform leadership roles
- 5+ years of experience owning or leading discovery domains such as search, browse, category experiences, or personalization at scale
- Proven ability to set vision and strategy and translate it into clear, executable roadmaps
- Strong cross‑functional leadership experience influencing Product, Engineering, UX, Data Science, and Marketing teams
- Demonstrated success improving discovery engagement, add‑to‑cart, and conversion through relevance, personalization, and experimentation
- Data‑driven mindset with hands‑on experience using analytics, testing frameworks, and performance metrics to inform decisions
- Experience leveraging AI‑driven discovery, personalization, or recommendation systems in a large‑scale eCommerce environment

The annual salary range for this position is $ - $. Additional compensation includes annual or quarterly performance bonuses and may include Regional Pay Zone (RPZ) based on location.
Minimum Qualifications- Bachelor’s degree in Business, Statistics, Social Science, Communications, or related field and 6 years’ experience in retail merchandising, operations management, or related area OR 8 years’ experience in retail merchandising, operations management, or related area.
- 2 years’ supervisory experience
- Leading a cross‑functional team
- Master’s in Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics, Supply Chain, or Transportation
