ABOUTTHE JOB
Deschutes County is accepting applications for an Automotive Mechanic (classified under Equipment Mechanic) with a preferred background in automotive, light truck, and light equipment repair. This position may also perform a variety of limited mechanical repairs, diagnostics, and modifications to heavy trucks and heavy equipment as needed.
Key Responsibilities- Tracking and performing preventative maintenance on automobiles, light trucks, and light equipment.
- Conduct inspections and troubleshooting using modern diagnostic equipment.
- Repair of gas and diesel vehicles including engine, transmission, differential, front end, and related equipment systems.
- Tire repairs, replacements, and seasonal swaps.
Knowledge of or experience with:
- Standard methods, materials, tools, equipment, and technology of the mechanic trade.
- Mechanical principles, occupational hazards and safety precautions.
- Testing and repairing starting systems, charging systems, chassis, engines, hydraulic systems, air conditioning, fuel systems, drive trains and related automotive components.
Skill in:
- Preventative maintenance.
- Locating, diagnosing, and repairing mechanical malfunctions in gas and diesel powered vehicles and equipment.
- Minor welding, fabricating, and modifying equipment.
- Use of diagnostic tools to perform tests and repairs on diesel and gas engines.
- Using a computerized Fleet Management Program for timekeeping, opening and closing work orders, and related fleet programs.
- Driving County equipment/vehicles on roads for field repair and test driving to diagnose and confirm repair.

Compensation$5,096.75 to $6,581.85 per month for a 172.67-hour work month. Excellent County benefit package when eligible. This union represented position is available immediately.
An additional 6% pay above base hourly rate is available for those who hold or obtain an ASE Master Mechanic Certification in either Automotive or Heavy-Duty Truck.
An additional 12% pay above base hourly rate is available for those who hold or obtain an ASE Master Mechanic Certification in both Automotive and Heavy-Duty Truck.

QUALIFICATIONS- High school diploma or equivalent; AND five (5) years mechanic experience preferably including experience in maintenance and repair of construction equipment;
Or satisfactory equivalent combination of experience and training as determined by hiring authority.
- Professional experience maintaining light equipment.
Driving is a requirement for this position. Possession of or ability to obtain a valid Oregon driver's license within 30 days of hire date. The employment offer will be contingent upon presentation of an acceptable and verifiable driver's license, pre-employment screening for criminal history, driving history, and controlled substances. Must have dependable transportation and be able and willing to drive throughout Deschutes County in sometimes adverse weather conditions.
