Requirements

The Emergency Department Veterinarian will be responsible for providing timely and comprehensive medical care to patients, including conducting physical examinations, interpreting diagnostic tests, and administering necessary treatments. They will maintain accurate records of all services rendered and ensure clear communication with clients or referring veterinarians regarding patient status and treatment plans. Additionally, the Emergency Department Veterinarian will actively participate in promoting the practice and contribute to the educational development of interns and externs.

Emergency

& Critical Care
  • Triage incoming emergency cases and determine priority of care.
  • Perform comprehensive physical exams and develop diagnostic and treatment plans.
  • Stabilize critically ill or injured patients using advanced medical techniques.
  • Perform emergency procedures such as wound repair, fluid resuscitation, pain management, and stabilization for trauma cases.
  • Interpret diagnostic tests including radiographs, ultrasound findings, laboratory results, and ECGs.
Hospitalized Patient Management
  • Oversee the care of hospitalized emergency and critical care patients.
  • Reassess patients throughout the shift and adjust treatment plans as needed.
  • Collaborate with technicians and assistants to ensure high-quality nursing care.
  • Provide detailed case handoffs to incoming medical teams.
Client Communication
  • Communicate clearly and compassionately with clients regarding diagnoses, treatment options, prognoses, and costs.
  • Provide updates throughout hospitalization and guide clients through difficult decisions.
  • Support clients during end-of-life discussions when necessary.
Team Collaboration
  • Work closely with emergency technicians, assistants, and support staff to deliver efficient, coordinated care.
  • Consult with specialty departments (surgery, internal medicine, cardiology, etc.) when appropriate.
  • Contribute to a positive, supportive hospital culture.
Medical Documentation
  • Maintain accurate, thorough, and timely medical records.
  • Document diagnostics, treatments, client communication, and case progression.
