Instructional Assistant – Automotive (Part Time, Temporary Hourly, Non-Benefited)
The Automotive Instructional Assistant is responsible for evening operation of the Tool Room and assisting self-paced students in the Automotive Spaces.
Hourly rate: $30.00. Overtime Eligible:
Non-Exempt.
- Maintain the Tool Room in good order (cleaning tools and putting them away promptly).
- Maintain and repair equipment and training aids, including keeping service records of unexpected failures and scheduled maintenance.
- Check equipment in and out to instructors and students based on current and future established procedures.
- Report inventory shortages or other problems using the e‑mail system.
- Be alert to security and safety concerns in accordance with OHSA and COCC guidelines, secure doors of rooms not in use, and promptly inform Campus Public Safety of any security or safety issues.
- Assist instructors with equipment set up.
- Provide good customer service to staff and students.
- Assist new students with operating automotive program procedures in individualized instructional‑technology labs.
- Monitor student activities in automotive lab spaces.
- Check in and reissue automotive program equipment.
- Perform other essential functions as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Ability to communicate by writing, phone, and email.
- Ability to monitor and assist students in the general daily operation of the Automotive labs.
- Familiarity with hand and power tools used in the Automotive lab.
- Ability to call for service and/or support for laboratory equipment when directed by supervisor.
- Ability to maintain inventory of department and program supplies accurately with monthly reports to supervisor.
- Ability to initiate and perform work without supervision.
- Ability to review, understand and apply concepts presented in training programs, conferences, or professional literature.
- Ability to work with the Automotive Program Director, faculty, Department Chair, Instructional Dean, and other COCC staff at all levels.
- Ability to work cooperatively and contribute to a diverse workplace.
- Ability to operate and oversee the operation of computers and other written materials including familiarity with Microsoft Office.
- Ability to verbally communicate effectively in English.
- Ability to use sound judgment and independently solve problems with an emphasis on safety and efficiency.
Work hours are determined by the supervisor and may vary. Work is typically performed standing; sitting, using hands and fingers, reaching, and occasional lifting up to 25 lbs. may be required. All essential functions must be performed with or without reasonable accommodation.
- Minimum 2 years of automotive classwork or experience.
Applicants who do not meet minimum qualifications but present equivalent experience will be considered.
Preferred Qualifications Education- Associate’s degree in Automotive Technology or relevant industry experience.
- Experience in a higher education environment.
