BEMIDJI STATE UNIVERSITY (BSU) invites applicants to join our team as the Director of Sports Medicine and Performance
. The Director of Sports Medicine and Performance has full discretion and is responsible for how budget is spent on all line items utilized by any sports medicine staff in any location (home or away). The position also manages daily 2 fully functioning athletic training facilities and 2 fully functioning athletics weight rooms.

The Director manages a complex schedule of practices and events ensuring appropriate medical coverage. Management and planning includes: emergency action plans (EAPS), physician and ambulance availability, managing emergency care supplies, routine and orthopedic clinic scheduling through various off‑site providers, and a variety of practices and processes which are a part of intercollegiate sport. This position must also ensure maintenance of continuing education standards set forth by the Board of Certification and Minnesota Board of Medical Practice for all staff.

They also ensure staff follow the NATA Code of Ethics and follow evidence‑based practice to ensure best medical practices.

Responsibilities of the Director of Sports Medicine and Performance include:
Providing medical care for university student‑athletes including, but not limited to prevention, evaluation, treatment, rehabilitation, and referral for injuries, illnesses, and mental health conditions. (35%)

  • Primary coverage of assigned teams including practices and games with travel as needed.
  • Coordinating with strength and conditioning staff and coaching staff on appropriate injury prevention techniques.
  • Immediate care and evaluation of athletic injuries.
  • Post‑injury treatment and rehabilitation including post‑surgical care.
  • Referral to appropriate providers and continued communication with those providers to ensure the best possible care.
  • Triaging and assessing illnesses and mental health issues with referral to appropriate providers when necessary, including continued communication with those providers.
  • Communicating injury status and athlete availability with athletics coaching staff.

Providing administrative leadership for athletic training and strength and conditioning departments. (30%)

  • Coordinating athletic training and strength and conditioning activities for 13 NCAA Division II teams and 2 NCAA Division I teams (approximately 400 student‑athletes).
  • Developing and updating policies and procedures for both departments consistent with University, NCAA, State, and Federal rules and regulations.
  • Providing supervision, work direction, and making hiring suggestions for four full‑time athletic trainers and two strength and conditioning coaches.
  • Providing supervision, work direction, and recruiting/hiring work‑study and regular payroll students.
  • Serving as the main liaison from the athletic training department with student health services to advocate for student‑athletes.
  • Developing relationships with local health providers and serving as the main contact with BSU's team physician and providers/administration at Sanford Health to advocate for best possible medical treatment.
  • Monitoring athletic training budget and making decisions on purchasing, replacing, and re‑conditioning equipment and medical supplies.
  • Managing, ordering, and monitoring inventory.
  • Making all sport assignments for the staff athletic trainers and ensuring that all athletic events and major sporting events are covered.
  • Coordinating NCAA drug testing on BSU campus.

Maintaining secure health records for all student‑athletes, including eligibility clearances and injuries. (10%)

  • Daily injury and treatment notes.
  • Medical eligibility waivers.
  • Certifying annual medical clearance.

Serving as Athletics Healthcare Administrator. (10%)

  • Maintaining awareness of all NCAA health and safety‑related legislation, interassociation recommendations and resources.
