GENERAL PURPOSE

Performs a variety of engineering related work for public works construction projects and programs.

This position is a paid internship with the City. It is expected to be filled from May-August 2026, and the intern will work up to 40 hours a week.

Supervision Received
  • Works under the general guidance and direction of the Public Works Director/City Engineer and may receive work direction from Engineering Technician I or Engineering Technician II.

  • None.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assists in preparing engineering and construction project plans and specifications, and other project development activities as assigned.
  • Inspects public works construction projects to ensure conformance with design specifications.
  • Assists in the City's MS4 Program and construction site inspections, as needed.
  • Assists in surveying project sites to obtain project-related data and information and/or assists with construction survey with engineering technician guidance, as needed.
  • Assists in the maintenance of engineering and infrastructure records, and in the preparation of as-built plans for infrastructure improvements as assigned.
Peripheral Duties
  • Provides assistance to other Public Works divisions as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience
  • Graduation from a high school or GED equivalent; and
  • Must be a student currently enrolled in a four (4) year Civil Engineering program, two (2) year Civil Engineering Technology program, or closely related field.
Necessary Knowledge Skills & Abilities
  • General knowledge of engineering, public works and/or construction principles, practices and methods.
  • Skill in operating the listed tools and equipment as assigned.
  • Ability to prepare, organize and maintain engineering field data; ability to effectively communicate, orally and in writing, with contractors, property owners, employees, the general public; ability to establish effective working relationships with contractors, City personnel and the general public.
Special Requirements
  • Must possess a valid State driver's license or have the ability to obtain one prior to employment.
  • Must be physically capable of moving about on construction work sites.
SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION

Tools & Equipment Used
  • Personal computer, including word processing, spreadsheet, database and computer-aided-design software; standard drafting tools; surveying equipment including level, electronic distance measuring device; pipe locator; engineering calculator; motor vehicle; phone; mobile radio.
  • Appropriate and/or required PPE will be provided by the City (hardhat, safety vest, etc.).

  • Work is performed in both office and field settings. Some outdoor work is required in the inspection of various land use developments, construction sites, or public works facilities. Hand-eye coordination is necessary to operate drafting instruments, computers and various pieces of office equipment.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls; and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to sit; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; talk or hear.
