Cleveland Cliffs has an immediate opening for a Shift Manager Electrical at our United Taconite Forbes, MN processing plant. The Shift Manager Electrical will direct and coordinate the safe maintenance, calibration, and improvement of plant instrumentation systems across all areas of the operation including the mine, fines crusher, concentrator, and pellet plant. Supervise the efforts of instrumentation technicians to safely and efficiently perform their tasks.

Lead the team in the execution of daily, weekly, and major instrumentation maintenance in accordance with existing maintenance standards, with a focus on enhancing reliability, supporting process automation initiatives, and ensuring control systems are operating at peak performance.

Summary of Responsibilities
  • Supervise and plan work for the instrumentation group, ensuring safety, quality, and effectiveness in all tasks performed.

  • Coordinate, facilitate, and motivate instrumentation technicians to safely and efficiently execute and complete their work assignments.

  • Work with the electrical shift manager on allocating resources and balancing workloads across crews.

  • Establish high performance standards for employees; promote and encourage achievement of these standards, provide feedback on progress, and implement disciplinary measures if necessary.

  • Assign work to crew members based on published schedules as well as break-in work. Frequently monitor progress of all jobs and address roadblocks limiting productivity.

  • Ensure employee compliance to corporate, property, and departmental policies and standard work procedures. Ensure compliance with the collective bargaining agreement.

  • Develop and manage weekly and monthly preventative maintenance routes, ensuring all instrumentation checks are performed on schedule.

  • Develop comprehensive plans for major repairs, including cost estimates, timelines, and required resources.

  • Manage the balance between break-in work, improvement projects, and scheduled maintenance, ensuring all are given appropriate attention.

  • Update scheduling personnel on daily and weekly carry-over work. Communicate complete and incomplete work orders to the scheduler at end of each shift.

  • Attend and contribute to weekly planning meetings, reporting on department progress and planning for future work.

  • Ensure 100% work order standard compliance, including close out, proper updating, and coding.

  • Develop and maintain an instrumentation issue log for the control room that is easily accessible and understandable for control room staff.

  • Prioritize and address issues raised by control room operators as a matter of urgency, ensuring quick and effective resolution to maintain smooth operations.

  • Serve as a key communication link between the electrical shop, instrumentation technicians, process group, and operations group. Participate in process meetings.

  • Support maintenance planners, maintenance engineers, reliability engineers, and crew members in their daily functions. Communicate with operations supervisors as required.

  • Identify areas where instrumentation systems could be improved or upgraded, including researching new technologies and proposing improvements to management.

  • Give special attention to potential upgrades that could pave the way for future process automation, reducing variability and operator dependencies.

  • Ensure all proposed upgrades are thoroughly vetted and proven out before implementation.

  • Monitor the quality of instrumentation work performed by the department. Conduct regular checks and audits, and develop procedures for maintaining quality.

  • Ensure all work is performed in compliance with safety regulations and MSHA standards. Coordinate and participate in safety and loss control programs.

  • Complete planned inspections, safety contacts, and task observations as part of the safe production focus.

  • Conduct work site visits to ensure all assigned work is performed safely and work areas are maintained to meet company rules and standards.

  • Become certifiable in NOLA (Nuclear Online Analyzer) systems. Must be able to pass required background check.

  • Develop and train on troubleshooting, operation, and repairs for all NOLA systems at the facility.

  • Identify and arrange for necessary training and development opportunities for instrumentation technicians. This includes technical training on equipment as well as professional development.

  • Training should include operation processes across the mine, fines crusher, concentrator, and pellet plant.

  • Coordinate and facilitate departmental training needs and encourage and assist in employee development.

  • Develop and manage an instrumentation drawing system for training and troubleshooting purposes.

  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date documentation of all work performed. Prepare regular reports on department activities and performance.

  • Establish and maintain relationships with vendors for instrumentation equipment and parts. Manage orders and resolve vendor issues.
