Area Supervisor – Ross Stores, Inc.
Ross Stores is an off‑price retailer with over 2,200 stores, dedicated to offering merchandise at extraordinary savings. The Area Supervisor is a member of store leadership responsible for a specific area of the store and for supervising all operations when serving as Manager on Duty. The role requires maintaining a clean, safe, and customer‑friendly environment, overseeing merchandise processes, leading associates, and ensuring compliance with corporate standards.
Responsibilities- Maintain a safe and secure store environment by practicing safe behaviors and ensuring timely reporting of unsafe conditions or practices to store leadership.
- Control building security, including entrance/exit, EAS devices, cash office, armored carrier pick‑ups, and register area.
- Regularly test fire alarm systems and respond to after‑hours alarms.
- Treat all customers, associates, and leaders with respect; demonstrate courtesy, friendliness, and professionalism at all times.
- Represent and support the company brand; maintain a professional appearance and enforce the dress code.
- Keep all areas clean, well‑maintained, and merchandised to standard; remove clutter and ensure clear egress to emergency exits.
- Oversee receipt and processing of all merchandise, ensuring recovery, sizing, markdowns, and back‑stock are completed to company standards.
- Handle all non‑merchandise inbound deliveries such as signs, supplies, and special deliveries.
- Maintain cleanliness and organization of all stockrooms and store back‑stock, including signage and re‑wraps.
- Conduct “Code 50” package inspections and maintain the Public View Monitor (PVM) system.
- Coach and train associates on cash registers, shortage control, and front‑end procedures; manage break schedules and ensure equipment functions properly.
- Ensure front‑end associates execute company best practices, maintain pace, and expedite customer line handling.
- Manage fitting rooms, ensuring garment tags are audited, returned merchandise is scanned and security‑tagged, and go‑back compliance is maintained.
- Perform administrative duties as assigned by the store manager, including cash pulls, bank deposits, payroll administration, and employee scheduling.
- Apply business acumen, prioritize tasks, collaborate across departments, and communicate effectively to lead by example.
- Support the company’s commitment to diversity, equality, inclusion, and community engagement.
- Adhere to personal and store brand standards while maintaining a professional appearance.
- Excellent verbal communication skills; fluency in English.
- Prior customer‑service and supervisory experience preferred.
- Familiarity with point‑of‑sale equipment and applications.
- Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations commonly used in retail.
- Availability to work evenings and weekends.
- Capacity to operate all store equipment, including PETs, registers, and PCs.
- Physical stamina to stand, walk, lift, bend, and climb as required; may need to lift >25 lb.
- Additional qualifications may apply for stockroom shifts (e.g., lift >20 lb).
- Ability to spend up to 100 % of working time standing, walking, and moving around the store.
- Regular bending, squatting, kneeling, climbing, carrying, reaching, and stooping.
- Occasional pushing, pulling, and lifting of more than 25 lb.
- Use of janitorial equipment, rolling racks, ladders, and other assigned supplies.
