The Design Engineer is responsible for engineering work involving complex design concepts and calculations related to pressure vessels and corresponding structural components. This role develops 3D solid models, detailed drawings and technical specifications for the manufacture of cargo tank motor vehicles serving the bulk liquid transportation industry.
Key Responsibilities- Apply engineering methods to develop products while ensuring quality, regulatory and profitability requirements.
- Assist and troubleshoot issues with production staff related to fabrication of components and assemblies.
- Calculate material usage for all components and parts in assemblies.
- Collaborate with designers on product‑line improvements.
- Update or change released engineering documents via Engineering Change Notice (ECN) procedures.
- Compute mathematical formulas to develop detailed specifications for components and/or machinery using computer‑assisted equipment.
- Review schematics and address questions related to system installation with senior engineering.
- Coordinate and consult with cross‑functional teams to design, layout, detail components and systems, and resolve design issues.
- Enter part numbers, bills of material and shop–floor routings into the ERP system.
- Create models, prints, schematics and bills of material to support production.
- Design, calculate and draft pressure vessels and corresponding structural components using CAD and FEA software.
- Develop 3D models and detailed drawings for components, assemblies and hardware based on specifications from sales.
- Develop drawings and specifications in compliance with all applicable regulations and standards.
- Evaluate change requests with respect to cost, weight, manufacturability, quality and customer impact.
- Remain flexible to shift tasks based on business and manufacturing needs.
- Lay out, draw, and detail schematics, parts and assemblies with all required views and information.
- Modify designs to correct operating deficiencies or reduce production issues.
- Notify supervisor of any quality concerns or delays.
- Add instructions and comments to drawings, reference manuals and technical publications to describe operation and maintenance of mechanical systems.
- Review and analyze specifications, sketches, drawings and related data to assess design impacts and required procedures.
- Verify accuracy of drawings, bills of material and routings.
- Adjust priorities based on manufacturing needs.
- Suggest or collaborate on design improvements or alternative methods to improve efficiency and accuracy.
- Verify accuracy of engineering information for manufacturing.
- Work within deadlines to ensure timely delivery.
