Position: Traffic Worker I, II, III - PW Seasonal (3/6-Month)

The City of Bellingham is currently seeking Seasonal Traffic Workers. JOB SUMMARY

This series performs progressively responsible manual and semi-skilled labor in the fabrication, installation, maintenance, operation and repair of traffic control devices such as traffic signal and street lighting systems, school zone and crosswalk warning systems, regulatory roadway signs and markings and parking control equipment. Operates hand and power tools and motorized equipment including lift trucks and excavation equipment for installation of pole bases and conduit.

May be called out for emergency work. Attention to safety and protection of personnel and equipment is integral to the work.

SALARY INFORMATION

Employees receive step increases on completion of 2080 hours in accordance with the Collective Bargaining Agreement and City policy.

  • Traffic Worker I starts at Step 1 ($29.90/hour); range $29.90–$39.01/hour.
  • Traffic Worker II starts at Step 1 ($31.69/hour); range $31.69–$41.35/hour.
  • Traffic Worker III starts at Step 1 ($33.59/hour); range $33.59–$43.83/hour.
BENEFIT INFORMATION

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Performs basic tasks and assists with more complex tasks associated with the installation, maintenance and repair of traffic signal equipment, street lighting, parking controls and roadway signage. Operates a boom and bucket truck and electronic test equipment.
  • Installs and maintains parking control equipment including meters, pay stations, electric vehicle charging stations, meter posts, signage and protective bollards. Tracks and records changes for GIS/Technical Services staff.
  • Collects parking revenue, secures equipment keys, maintains data devices, removes cash and coin revenue, downloads data, delivers revenue to bank, completes deposit paperwork.
  • Assists in the preparation and manufacture of traffic, directional and informational city signs.
  • Uses hand tools, 16 lb. sledgehammer, drills, roto‑hammers, torches, trimmers, grinders, man‑lifts, bucket trucks and boom trucks.
  • Sets up temporary traffic control devices including cones, barricades, flags, variable message signs and performs other safety‑related duties.
  • Logs information, completes work orders and paperwork as necessary.
  • ADDITIONAL WORK PERFORMED
  • Performs other manual labor within the scope of the classification.
  • Participates in job‑related training.
  • May occasionally perform minor electrical work.
  • WORKING ENVIRONMENT

    Work is primarily performed outdoors in all weather conditions. Occasionally performed indoors at a computer terminal or work desk. Adheres to applicable safety precautions. Work involves moderate risks including moving equipment, high speed or high voltage equipment, exposure to chemicals, confined spaces, and proximity to roadway traffic. Employees may be required to use protective clothing (coveralls, rain gear, hard hats, vests, masks, boots, goggles, gloves, shields).

    Continuous physical exertion is required.
