Summary
The Whatcom County Council Office will hire one part‑time temporary employee to work as a Council Office Intern for spring quarter 2026. Intern will work approximately 10‑15 hours per week, for 10 weeks or more, paid every other week. Intern will be primarily assigned to special research projects for Council members and will work under the supervision of the Legislative Analyst.
Special projects assigned to the intern may include research on issues such as affordable housing, climate policy, the Justice Project, and zoning updates. Intern tasks may include, but are not limited to, drafting memos, writing meeting notes, attending Council meetings, attending off‑site community meetings with Council members, planning and staffing public events organized by the Council Office, evaluating programs, drafting ordinances and resolutions, and reviewing Whatcom County Code and drafting potential code revisions.
The internship program will include a one‑on‑one meeting with one to three Council members to learn more about their priorities. Intern will also gain valuable educational experience working with Council members and learning about the county’s legislative branch.
Working ConditionsWork is performed in the County Council Office, with potential attendance at off‑site meetings assisting Council members in the community. Work is primarily performed in an office and meeting room setting. Sits or stands for long periods of time. May occasionally lift and carry items weighing up to 25 pounds. May be required to attend meetings or perform duties outside of normal office hours.
Possibility of exposure to hostile and offensive language from the public.
LENGTH OF POSITION: approximately April 13 to July 2, 2026
Rate of Pay: $22.00 per hour
Qualifications- All applicants will be considered; current school enrollment not required

- Must be proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel and have strong communication and writing skills
At its sole discretion, Whatcom County may consider combinations of education, experience, certifications, and training in lieu of specifically required qualifications contained herein.
