Overview
The City of Bellflower is seeking motivated individuals for the Recreation Leader II (Part-Time) position to join the City's dynamic Parks and Recreation team. There are currently two (2) vacancies for the part-time Recreation Leader II position. This position will support The Oak Center, Bellflower's future multi-generational community center serving teens and senior citizens. The facility is currently under construction and is anticipated to open in late 2026.
Leading up to the opening of the facility, the incoming Recreation Leader II positions will assist Program Coordinators with developing teen and senior programming that will be scheduled at the facility and offering some programming at other locations until The Oak Center opens.
This recruitment will close on Monday, February 16, 2026, or when 25 qualified applications are received, whichever occurs first. Interested individuals are encouraged to apply immediately. Interviews are tentatively scheduled for Friday, February 20, 2026.
Supervision and Class CharacteristicsUnder general supervision, Recreation Leader II assists in planning and conducting recreation programs and activities; and maintains recreational facilities.
Supervision received and exercised
:
Receives general supervision from a Recreation Supervisor, Recreation Coordinator, Program Coordinator, and/or Recreation Specialist. Provides technical and functional direction to lower-level staff.
Class characteristics
:
This is the full journey level in the class series. Positions at this level are distinguished from the Recreation Leader level by the performance of the full range of duties as assigned, working independently and exercising judgment and initiative. Positions at this level only receive occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise, and are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies of the work unit.
Positions in this class are flexibly staffed and positions at the II level are normally filled by advancement from the Recreation Leader level requiring one or more years of experience and performance exceeding standards. When filled from the outside, the employee is required to have prior related experience which allows the employee to meet the qualification standards for the II level.

- Assist in the planning, promoting, conducting, supervising, and evaluating of recreational programs and activities.
- Interact and stimulate interest while conducting and supervising program activities including but not limited to sports, games and contests, special events, art and crafts, social activities, park patrol, and transportation services.
- Assist with coordinating and supervision of community special events.
- Inspect assigned recreation facilities and/or equipment; report necessary repairs.
- Provide technical and administrative support to Parks and Recreation management staff.
- Review and evaluate work products, methods, programs, and procedures.
- Complete records and reports as required.
- Provide and coordinate staff and/or volunteer training.
- Answer questions and provide information to the public.
- Promote and ensure safety procedures around participants, staff, and spectators.
- Order supplies and equipment.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Knowledge of: Principles and practices of recreation programming; effective recreation leadership techniques; principles and objectives of recreation and their application to individual and group behavior;
English usage, spelling, vocabulary, grammar, and punctuation; principles and practices of supervision and training; methods, practices, and equipment used in assigned recreation programs; basic first aid methods and techniques; principles and procedures of record keeping; safety precautions and procedures; safe driving principles and practice, if required for specific assignment; rules and equipment pertaining to various games; effective recreation leadership techniques. - Ability to: Operate a motor vehicle safely, if required for specific assignment; operate modern office equipment including computer equipment and software programs; organize and conduct a wide variety of recreation activities for all age groups, including diverse and engaging programs for both teens and senior citizens; promote and organize recreation activities with fellow employees and supervisors; communicate and interact with both teens and senior citizens, as well as collaborate with other team members and stakeholders;
