Position Summary

The Physics Department at Bellevue College is accepting applications for a part-time position as a physics instructor. We seek a collaborative and equity-minded individual committed to teaching effectiveness and closing opportunity gaps. Particularly desired are applicants with interest and experience in some combination of physics education research, connecting theoretical classroom learning with experimental observation, and building an inclusive environment for students from diverse backgrounds.

The common duties will be teaching Physics to first year students in one of a variety of courses, presenting the appropriate content in a manner that reflects the background of the students for whom the course is designed while achieving the course objectives as described in the course outcome documents provided by the department. Typically, we will be hiring for specific courses (see Essential Functions below) but the most common will be introductory mechanics.

Pay, Benefits & Work Schedule

Applications received by 02/16/2026 will be given full consideration. Adjunct Professor is typically assigned as needed on a quarterly basis, with no expectation of continued employment beyond the current appointment.

Quarterly remuneration for 5-credit lecture class is $6,418.75 - $7,824.66. Compensation is prorated based on type and duration of assignments. Individuals newly hired to Adjunct Professor group at the college are placed at the minimum rate per union bargaining agreement. Certain positions may also be eligible for assignment/project-based additional compensation, including a High Demand Stipend up to $8,350 annually, prorated based on the discipline and duration of the assignment.

All additional compensations are subject to change depending on funding and negotiated agreement.

Generous benefits package for eligible employees is offered through Washington State plans that includes multiple medical, dental, life and disability coverage choices for employees and dependents; choices of retirement and deferred compensation plans; paid personal leave plan; transit program, reduced tuition, employee discounts and memberships, etc. Eligible employees are faculty who work a combined load of at least 50% at Bellevue College and other Washington State public institutions of higher education for two consecutive quarters are eligible for health and dental insurance at the start of the second consecutive quarter.

In addition to teaching, faculty maintains office hours and may participate in department and college activities. This position is represented by the Bellevue College Association of Higher Education (BCAHE) union.

About the Department

The Physics Department is included in the Physical Sciences Program within the Science Division and currently consists of five full-time faculty and six quarterly-contracted adjunct faculty. More than seventy sections of physics, including both lecture-based and inquiry-based introductory courses, algebra- and calculus-based college physics sequences, and a modern physics course, are offered annually. Physics instruction is supported by a comprehensive collection of laboratory and demonstration apparatus and laboratory support staff.

The members of the Physics Department are an active and eclectic group with a variety of research backgrounds, who share a common commitment to excellence in teaching. Members of the department participate in professional activities at both the regional and national levels. Except for a very few courses (currently only Phys&100) all of the department offerings are integrated lab-lecture courses with students earning both laboratory and lecture credit in the same course.

These generally meet for 7 hours per week together with the office hour requirements that are noted in the current contract.
