Job Description

POSITION OBJECTIVE:

The position of General School Assistant is for the purpose of providing instructional and non-instructional support in the school setting, assisting school staff as they focus on the instructional initiatives.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Work under the direct supervision of a certificated, administrative or classified staff member as assigned.
  • Support teachers with materials, supplies and copying.
  • Monitor and assist student progress within a classroom setting.
  • Assist individual students or small groups in a classroom setting as directed by a certificated staff member.
  • Record observations and data regarding student progress as directed by the classroom teacher or administrator.
  • Assist with activities offered by the school, which may include before or after school activities.
  • Accompany groups of students on field trips and other outings.
  • Attend staff meetings as required.
  • Participate in professional development and training as required for the position.
  • Work with English Language Learners, requiring an understanding of their unique needs.
  • Support elementary school health clinics by performing duties assigned by the nurse.
  • Enter records regarding students as needed for the position.
  • Provide support for serving a diverse population of students.
  • Provide clerical and other support if assigned to a school office or non-classroom setting.
  • Supervise students in non-classroom settings, including lunch room, playground or cross-walks.
  • Supervise parking lots as required.
  • Collaborate with other staff members as required for the assignment.
  • Perform or track multiple tasks simultaneously and remain flexible to changes in work assignment.
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned.
REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS

Reports to and is directly supervised by Building Administrator.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

Required:

  • High school graduation or equivalent.
  • At least one of the following:
    • ETS Para educator Assessment.
    • Associate of Arts degree (original transcripts).
    • 72 quarter credits or 48 semester credits at an institution of higher education (original transcripts).
    • Registered apprenticeship program (certificate).
    • Foreign degrees accepted if evaluated by a NACES member company.

Preferred:

  • Experience working in a school setting.
  • Associate degree or equivalent.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS &

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Positions in this class typically require stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, finger dexterity, grasping, talking, hearing, seeing, and repetitive motions. Light work may require up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, 10 pounds of force frequently, or negligible amount of force constantly. Incumbents may be subjected to moving mechanical parts, odors, chemicals, extreme temperatures, inadequate lighting, workspace restrictions, and intense noises.

CONDITIONS

OF EMPLOYMENT

AISP pay range P1-A $24.66 per hour to $26.61 per hour (starting hourly rate is $24.66 per hour). Work schedule is M, T, TH, F 7:35am to 2:05pm and W 7:35am to 12:35pm (29 hours/week for a 192-day annual assignment). Medical, dental, vision, long-term disability, and life-insurance eligibility is based upon 630 hours worked within a school year. Retirement provided through Washington State Department of Retirement Systems.

This position is temporary and employment will end on the last day of the 2025-26 school year (anticipated to be 6/23/26).
