Overview

Retina Consultants of Texas (RCTX) is seeking an Ophthalmic Technician to join our innovative team with the mission of Fighting Blindness For The World To See. This position is responsible for accurate documentation, summarizing patient medical history, and performing preliminary ocular examinations. The Technician maintains patient flow and communicates appointment status to patients and Clinic Managers at the Vintage Park Clinic.

Candidates must be able to travel to various clinics and support the Clinic hours of Monday through Friday between 6:30 am–6:30 pm. Schedules are provided weekly and are based on the provider's clinic, patient and surgery schedules. Clinic staff may have weekend hours if available.

Responsibilities
  • Obtain patient history including chief complaint, history of present illness, ocular and general medical histories, allergies, and current medications.
  • Accurately perform and document visual acuity, confrontational visual fields, evaluation of motility, pupillary function tests, dilation, and ocular tonometry.
  • Provide compassionate patient care throughout the clinic flow.
  • Perform opening and closing duties; inventory count, prepare drugs as needed, and manage sterile instruments.
  • Maintain cleanliness in exam and procedure rooms and back up supply stock.
  • Provide back-up to the ophthalmic photographer performing OCTs.
  • Contact patients who no-show to appointments and reschedule as needed.
  • Maintain a smooth flow of patients to the physician and adjust test sequence as needed.
  • Troubleshoot equipment as necessary (projector, tonopen, autoclave).
  • Occasionally assist physicians with laser procedures, injections, and minor procedures.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications and Skills
  • Ability to perform comprehensive work ups.
  • Ability to educate patients regarding instillation of eye drops and treatment plan instructions.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong organizational skills with attention to detail and the ability to multitask.
  • Ability to work as part of a team and use multiple computer systems.
  • Training and understanding of HIPAA requirements.
Education
  • High school diploma required; some college preferred.
Experience
  • One to two years of ophthalmic assistant experience preferred.
  • Certification as an ophthalmic assistant preferred.
  • Valid CPR certification required.
Physical Abilities
  • Must be able to move frequently between standing and sitting during clinic sessions.
  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Must be able to type or write legibly in a dimly-lit setting.
  • Must be able to hear softly spoken words.
  • Must assist patients getting in and out of exam chairs.
  • Lifting up to 50 pounds.
