  • You will work actively on the preparation and defence of a PhD thesis in the field of heritage sciences.
  • This position is offered within the context of the Horizon Europe MSCA Doctoral Network ‘CHARM’.
  • CHARM (Conservation of Heritage Architecture, buildings and sites by Resilient Methods: hydro-climate factors) focuses on sustainable conservation of architectural heritage. More information can be found at (Use the "Apply for this Job" box below)./
  • You will work on the topic of Nature-based solutions for heritage buildings: green facades.
  • This topic has five objectives. Study the impact of plant species (deciduous and evergreen) on microclimate and hygrothermal conditions of walls in different seasonal and climatic conditions (in laboratory and on‐site) Obj
    2. Study the impact of plant density (leaf area indices) on the sheltering effect and moisture conditions of walls under different wind‐driven rain loads (in laboratory and on‐site) Obj
    3. Optimize ground‑based vertical greening systems (incl. support system) as protection and regulation layer with respect to climatic drivers and specifically wind‐driven rain;

    4. Study the water management inside façade using vegetation will allow to develop decision‑support tool that can be applied for preventive conservation of our heritage structures Obj
    5. Perform a heritage impact assessment to address and enhance visual and other impacts of historical buildings, increase biodiversity, and improve the health and well‑being of residents.
  • You will participate in and contribute to consortium activities, including several regular training sessions. Organised by the consortium.
  • You follow the Antwerp Doctoral School training program.
  • You will perform a research stay abroad at the end of year 2: 4 months at NTNU in Norway.
  • You will publish scientific articles related to the research project.
  • You participate in international conferences related to the research project.
  • You will carry out a limited number of teaching and research support tasks for ARCHES.
  • You will be co‑supervised by researchers from the Royal Institute for Cultural Heritage in Belgium (KIK‑IRPA) and will collaborate with their research group.

Profile

  • You hold a Master degree in Engineering, Sciences, or equivalent or you will have obtained it by the time you start work. You must not have a doctoral degree at the date of recruitment.
  • You can demonstrate good skills in data processing and data analysis tools (e.g. Rstudio), and the interest to further develop these skills.
  • You demonstrate far-reaching interest in the field of built heritage and nature‑based solutions.
  • Your teaching competences are in line with the University of Antwerp’s educational vision .
  • You act with attention to quality, integrity, creativity and cooperation.
  • You demonstrate adequate English. Holding a C1 (or better) English certificate is considered as a plus.
  • You are open and constructive in communication and attitude. You are willing to provide support to peers.
