Job Purpose
The Mechanical Engineer is responsible for ensuring the reliable, safe, and efficient operation of all mechanical equipment within the pet food manufacturing facility. This includes preventive maintenance, breakdown response, continuous improvement, and support of production operations in line with food safety, quality, and health & safety standards.
Key Responsibilities Mechanical Maintenance & Reliability- Carry out planned preventive maintenance (PPM) on all mechanical plant and equipment, including:
- Mixers, extruders, dryers, conveyors, grinders, pumps, and packaging machinery
- Diagnose and repair mechanical faults to minimize downtime
- Respond promptly to breakdowns and production issues
- Maintain accurate maintenance records and documentation
- Work closely with production teams to support efficient factory operations
- Assist with machine changeovers, line improvements, and throughput optimization
- Support installation, commissioning, and modification of machinery
- Ensure all work is carried out in compliance with:
- UK Health & Safety legislation
- Food safety standards (e.g. BRC, HACCP, GMP)
- Follow and promote safe systems of work, including lockout/tagout procedures
- Participate in risk assessments and safety audits
- Identify opportunities to improve equipment reliability, efficiency, and energy use
- Contribute to continuous improvement and lean manufacturing initiatives
- Assist in root cause analysis and corrective actions for recurring issues
- Assist with spare parts management and stock control
- Liaise with external contractors and equipment suppliers when required
- Support contractor supervision to ensure safety and quality standards
- Apprenticeship or NVQ Level 3 (or equivalent) in Mechanical Engineering or Maintenance
- Proven experience in a manufacturing or industrial environment
- Strong mechanical fault-finding and problem-solving skills
- Experience with rotating equipment, conveyors, bearings, gearboxes, and pneumatics
- Good understanding of health & safety in an industrial setting
- Experience in food or pet food manufacturing
- Knowledge of hygiene‑critical environments
- Basic welding/fabrication skills
- Experience working with CMMS maintenance systems
- Strong practical mechanical skills
- Ability to work under pressure and respond to breakdowns
- Good communication and teamwork skills
- Organised with attention to detail
- Proactive and continuous improvement mindset
