Job Description

The Faculty of Law and Criminology at ULB is opening a full-time chair in European law, with a view to teaching several courses on European Union law to a variety of audiences (Bachelor's, Master's and Master's specialising in European law).

Teaching and scientific objectives:

Teaching

The successful candidate will be required to develop teaching tools to promote the study of European Union law and comparative law among law students enrolled in various programmes. The courses to be taught are aimed at bachelor's, master's and specialised master's students. Some courses also require the supervision of teaching assistants responsible for tutorials (travaux pratiques).

The successful candidate will supervise Master's and specialised Master's students in their final year’s projects. In addition, he/she will be involved in the collective management of the specialised Master's in European Law.

Research

The successful candidate will be invited to join the Centre for European Law at the Faculty of Law and Criminology and conduct research in the field of European Union Law.

In addition to their personal research activities, the successful candidate will be required to:

  • Actively participate in the Centre's internal seminars;
  • Organise and participate in conferences related to European Union law and the Centre's research interests;
  • Collaborate with members of the European Law Centre, the Faculty of Law and Criminology, and affiliated members of the ULB's Institute for European Studies, including in interdisciplinary research activities;
  • Contribute to the supervision of researchers in the field of European Union law (supervision or co-supervision of doctoral theses, possibly in partnership with colleagues from other disciplines, research projects).
  • Contribute to the integration of the ULB into Belgian and international networks active in this field, in order to increase the university's visibility.

Community services

The successful candidate will be expected to participate actively in the internal life of the University, particularly in the Faculty of Law and Criminology, the Centre for European Law and the Institute for European Studies. He/she will be encouraged to develop expertise that can be put to good use in the services provided by the university to the community, whether in the form of outreach, applied research or cutting-edge research.

Courses included in the teaching load at the time of recruitment

The courses that are part of the teaching load at the time of recruitment are as follows:

  • Protection juridictionnelle dans l’Union européenne (24 hours, first semester, Brussels): compulsory course in French for students enrolled in the Master's programme specialising in European law, and offered as an optional course for students enrolled in the Master's programme in law, specialising in international and public law (approximately 60 students). The course is accompanied by 12 hours of tutorials supervised by an assistant.
  • Droit public européen (24 hours, second semester, Brussels): optional course in French offered to students on the Master's degree in law, specialising in international and public law (approximately 100 students).
  • Internal Market (24 hours, second semester, Mons, taught in English): course in English open to Master's students in law, specialising in “business law”, European law module. The course will be offered for the first time in  (estimated enrolment of around 20 students).
